  • Evolutionary control synthesis for experimental devices
    Filipič, Bogdan
This paper reports on evolutionary synthesis of control for laboratory experimental devices. In general, a control synthesis task consists of two stages: establishing the controller structure and ... setting its parameters. We demonstrate that under safety preconditions these stages can be carried out by means of evolutionary experimentation. We use an evolutionary algorithm interacting with a physical device to evaluate candidate controller structures and parameter values. Moreover, unlike in traditional control system design, where the objective is to minimize some error measure, we account for performance criteria close to human operators. These concepts were tested on two experimental control tasks: positioning a floating object in a water container, and controlling load swinging on a small-scale model of a container crane.
