  • Die Dynamik der politischen Links-rechts - Schwingungen in Österreich : Die Ergebnisse einer Expretenbefragung
    CAMPBELL, David
An expert pilot survey was carried out in 1991 to test left/right aspects of the Austrian political system. Four results appear central. (1) During the time period 1975-1991 the ideological and ... spatial left/right distance between the two "catch all parties", SPÖ and ÖVP, decreased. (2) The overall ideological distance between all parties increased. (3) In the period 1975-1991 a general swing to the right shaped and structured the party system. (4) Concerning the perceived spatial spectrum of the individual parties, the left-of-center Green Alternative (GA) and the far-right FPÖ cover the widest range. SPÖ and ÖVP cover a medium spectrum, and the VGÖ and the communist KPÖ occupy the smallest spatial width. These results were used to construct an index that focuses on the political left/right swings. The index covers the election results and the distribution of seats in parliament and the political composition of the Austrian government. In this context the following political swings can be located post-1949. (1) 1949-1970: Right- Swing, (2) 1971-1982: Left Swing, and (3) since 1983: A new Right Swing.
