    Background: Injury will soon become a disease more closely associated with elderly, not just a problem that affects the Ćyoung, most productive members of our societyĆ. The outcome of multipfe ... injured elderly patients is uncertaindespite of the more demanding and expensive treatment. More data about the outcome might have consequences on therapeutic strategies, health care planning, and the altocation of resources. MethodsČ A total 41 patients met the inclusion criteriaČ age >65 years, blunt trauma, major injury to at least two bodily regions, Injury Severity Score (ISS) at least 18. Mortality, factors that predict mortality and functional ability 1 year after injury werereviewed. The standardized form for polytraumatized patients was used for the purpose of collecting of data. The following data were obtainedČ age, sex,mechanism and nature of injury, pre-existing medical conditions, injury type and severity, complications, functional results at discharge and at 1-year after injury. Pre-existing diseases were classified according to APACHEII preinjury conditions. The ISS and Revised Trauma Score (RTS) were calculated for each patient. The probability of survival (Ps) was determined using the TRISS methodology. Disability at discharge from acute care and one year after injury was measured by three Functional independence measure elements (FIM) elements on original 4-point scaleČ feeding, locomotion and excpression. Results: There were 16 in-hospital deaths among 41 geriatric trauma patients mortality 39%). There was no significant difference in age between the survivors and non-survivors. Female patients were more likely to die following trauma as male patient. The effect of comorbid disease was not associated with poorer outcome. Severe thoracic injury was found to correlate with mortality and morbidity. The mean ISS was 31.3 (SD 11.3). (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
