  • Pojavnost bolečine v sklopu najpogostejših bolezni in stanj v fizikalni in rehabilitacijski medicini
    Pražnikar, Aleš
Musculo-skeletal disorders together with some most common disorders of nervous system represent about two thirds of all clinical cases in physical and rehabilitation medicine programmes. Within these ... the group of patients with chronic pain syndromes is huge and therefore equally important at both the clinical and organizational level. In the article we have gathered the epidemiological data on some most frequent disorders and extrapolated the number of patients with chronic pain within the specific disorder according to the available literature. Further on, we have used the acquired numbers and shares to calculate the approximate numbers of patients with chronic pain in the population of the Republic of Slovenia as exact data do not exist. One can expect 90.000 patients with osteoarthritis (more than 9000 new patients per year), 20.000 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (more than 1000 new patients per year), between 80.000 and 600.000 adults would complain about low back pain in any chosen moment of time, further, one can expect 56.000 episodes of acute low back pain and some 24.000 episodes of ischialgia with some 5000 cases with transitions to chronic pain syndrome per year in Slovenia. At the same time, more than 90.000 older people in Slovenia suffer chronic pain due to osteoporotic fractures. We estimate that some 60.000 patients with painful polyneuropathy due to diabetes alone live in Slovenia as well as significant number of patients with chronic pain after stroke, head trauma, multiple sclerosis and other neurological disorders. Chronic pain causes significant co-morbidity and affects quality of life in a complex manner. Chronic pain also affects socio-economic status of the patients and their families. The burden of chronic pain syndromes within the society is huge and terms of gross national income may climb up 3%.
