  • Can a numerical digital human finger model predict subjective comfort rating of handheld products? [Elektronski vir]
    Harih, Gregor ; Plesec, Vasja
As handheld products and tools have evolved due to technological advancements, their physical interaction with users has not progressed at the same pace. To enhance human tactile perception, various ... ergonomic and biomechanical principles have been employed, with most of the research focusing on optimizing the diameter of simple cylindrical handles. Digital human hand models have been developed that have enabled researchers to identify the handle shape that best fits the hand in its optimal power grasp posture. However, stiffness of product interface layers and their influence on tactile perception and comfort have not been investigated thoroughly. The present study investigated the optimization of material properties of a deformable interface material for handheld products to improve tactile perception and subjective comfort using Finite Element Method (FEM) and a digital human finger model. Developed methodology identified deformable interface material with the optimal combination of tactile perception, stability, and reduced contact pressure. Deformable handle with optimized mechanical behavior along with handles with softer and stiffer mechanical behavior and plastic material were manufactured using 3D printing technology. To evaluate the subjective comfort of the optimized handle material, a wood cutting task was performed using the manufactured handles. Results revealed significant improvement in tactile perception of the proposed optimized deformable handle compared to the traditional plastic handle and the soft deformable handle. The study suggests that while FEM modeling can be used for optimization, subjective measurement is still necessary for validation and fine-tuning of the obtained results from optimization.
