  • Engineering design education supported by an intelligent computer system

    Decisions made in the design process have a significant influence on the competitiveness of the future product on the market. Therefore, the quality of engineering design education at the university ... level is very importnat. The paper presents the process of design education based on practical team work on a project with emphasis on the difficulties due to the inexperience of students. The possibility of using artificial intelligence to solve the sudents` difficilties is discussed. An intelligent computer system that helps our students to evaluate and correctly interpret the results of finite element analysis and to find the critical places in the structure is described in detail. Moreover, the system also suggests the students the appropriate redesign actions to optimise the structure. To be able to properly understand the results of numerical analyses and choose the right redesign requires a lot of experience which students usually do not have. Artificial intelligence could help to resolve problems in this domain more effectively.
