    An investigation was performed using WP-specimens with a through-the-thickeness center-crack into the fracture toughness of a butt-weld. Samples with a simulated microstructure were prepared for the ... analysis of fracture properties of particular areas of HAZ and in the weld metal. Microstructures were made on a thermal cycle simulator where the same thermal conditions were simulated as those during welding. The results of investigations on WP-specimens, in which the effects of residual stresses are included to a certain extent, show that areas with low toughess can be found in the HAZ and the weld metal. They are known as local brittle zones that decrease the resistivity of weld against the brittle fracture.
