Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder associated with higher risk of delayed onset of menarche, infertility, recurrent abortions, and adverse outcomes in pregnancy and in puerperium. Our study was ... performed to analyze the association between celiac disease and onset of menarche, disorders of menstrual cycle, and reproductive disorders in general in the group of celiac patients and compare these with healthy controls. The present study was a retrospective case-control study that enabled us to analyze the impact of celiac disease on reproductive health of celiac disease patients with the use of a questionnaire specifically developed for the study. The study included 145 celiac disease patients, members of Slovenian Celiac Society, between 15 and 51 years of age and a group of healthy women without celiac disease (N = 162) who served as controls. The present case-control study gave an insight into the reproductive health of celiac disease patients. We found that in Slovenia, the age at menarche in celiac disease patients is comparable with healthy women. We concluded that celiac disease (treated and untreated) may not be associated with late menarche and with disorders of menstrual cycle. This might be encouraging, suggesting that the nutrition of girls and adolescents is well balanced and sufficient enough to prevent the impact of celiac disease on reproductive health of young girls.
