  • Late pleistocene redirection of the Cerkniščica river: effect on the neighbouring karst

    Detailed study of the Cerkniščica's sediments in Cerkniško polje revealed that the river turned this direction relatively late, presumably in the middle Würm. Its alluvial fan chocked the main ... vertical ponors, and deflected the river westwards, i.e. into Rakov Škocjan valley, and further on, into Planinska jama. Increased quantity of water that entered the East branch of the cave redirected the flow of the Pivka river into North branch, and reactivated since long time ago, choked (present) entrance to the cave. Retransported sediment from Planinska jama can be traced across Planinsko polje into the ponor caves on the North.
