  • Properties of PM high-speed steels prepared from water atomized powders by hot extrusion
Šuštaršič, Borivoj ; Vodopivec, Franc ; Kosec, Ladislav
The applicability of water atomized powders for the preparation of good-quality high-speed steels was investigated. Water atomized powders of two different chemical compositions were prepared. The ... chemical and physical properties of prepared powders were determined. Water atomized powders were then cold isostatically pressed (CIP) and vacuum sintered. Sintered preforms were then hot extruded. From soft-annealed extruded billets cylindrical specimens for mechanical testing were prepared. After vacuum heat treatment of specimens their main mechanical properties were determined. Density measurements and metallographic examinations of samples showed almost densification and a superior small-grain microstructure. The resulting mechanical properties of PM high-speed steels prepared from water atomized powders show that the PM route: water atomization ▫$\Rightarrow$▫ CIP ▫$\Rightarrow$▫ vacuum sintering ▫$\Rightarrow$▫ hot extrusion could be a useful process in the production of simple to complex profile-shaped billets from good-quality high-speed steels.
