  • Psychological aspects of students' self-concepts in democratic societies : a cross-cultural study
    Kobal Grum, Darja
The empirical investigation of student self-concept in institutional educationhas widely spread in the past two decades. It is indispensable today in the context of psychological research, analysing ... the improvement of student`s quality of knowledge, academic achievement and their satisfaction with the school as well as the teacher`s educational styles and openness of their communication with students. The aim of this research study eas to determine some aspects of the self-concept of secondary school students in Slovenia and France as related to gender, age and several socio-economic variables. The study comprised 230 subjects - 169 Slovenian and 61 French students - attending the third class of the secondary school. The Slovenian students belonged to the first generation of secondary school conceived in a traditional way after a long period of education based on ideological premises. The changes in Slovene educational system were made possible by new democratic processes in our society. Data on the samples were assessed by means of the Self-description questionnaire III (Marsh, O`Neill), Self-esteem scale (Rosenberg) and the a general questionnaire which acquires information about the sample. The results indicate some statistical significant differences within each national group. The description and the interpretation of the results gathered by cross-cultural research seem promising in the sense of getting new insights in the field of the self-concept in institutional education
