  • Homo Historicus : how the teaching of history and culture contribute to shaping future citizens
    Hourdakis, Anthony
The study of history and culture is a subject that has begun to break free from the framework of traditional teaching methodology over the last few years. New evidence brought to light in the ... international research literature reports both that educators and teachers have recognized the peculiarities involved in the transference of historical knowledge to pupils of different ages, and that historians have themselves become involved in this area of concern. One further factor to be added to the above is the range of differentsocio-cultural environments in which children now live. Thus the renewal and enrichment of history and so-called cultural studies on the one hand, and research work into the cross-cultural approach to child socialization on the other, inevitably lead to the revision if not the transcendence of the traditional framework with regard to approaching and treating history and culture in general. Through observing the interplay and dynamic association of the above factors our aim is to compose and activate a new scientific and didactic paradigm on the level of techniques, beliefs and values. This new pedagogic approach must have three further variables as its focal point, these being the teacher's particular professional conscience, thepupil and history textbooks.
