    Background. The intrauterine device is an affective method of birth control. However pelvic inflammatory disease has been associated with the use of intrauterine devices even since they were ... introduced. In review author discussepidemiology and the role of current intrauterine device use in the pathogenesis of pelvic inflammatory disease. Dufferent intrauterine devices and their lifespan were alleged. Long term use and replacement has been takenin concern. Conclusions. Pelvic inflammatory disease among intrauterine device users is related to insertion process and to background risk of sexually transmitted disease. Intrauterine device use in nulliparous is not recommended. Careful screening before reinsertion and counselling is of outmost importance.
