    Background. The purpose of this study was to determine in a prospective, randomised design whether artroscopically assisted anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction offered any significant immediate ... or short-term advantages overtraditional reconstruction through a limited transligamentar approach. Methods. In 1996 (March-September) patients with a deficiency of the anterior cruciate ligament were assigned to one of two treatment groups: Groups I (transligamentar reconstruction) on Group II (arthroscopic reconstruction). Postoperatively, both groups were treated identically. Results. Economic advantages of each technique were evaluated through the following factors: length of surgery, duration of hospitalization and amount of pain medication. Success of operative treatment was evaluated using standardised objective (clinical evaluation, KLT artrometer measurements, Z-rays) and subjective (100-pts. Questionnaire) observations. in 90% cases of the cases results in both groups were excellent. Conclusions. Arthroscopic reconstruction is time-consuming operative method that requires additional technical equipment, but is does not give better functional or aesthetic results.
