    Starting points. In review article, glaucomatous diseases are arranged according to their pathogenesis, symptoms and clinical picture. Most frequent risk factors are given together with the novelties ... from the domain of molecular genetics. Besides medicamentous, laser and surgical treatment, the most effective treatment of individual types of glaucomas and the most adequate time of the beginning of treatment are defined. Conclusions. Regarding the high number of diseased people with glaucoma and often progressive course of the disease, the recognising of symptoms, family anamnesis, adequate examination by ophthalmologist and a timely treatment are of utmost importance, be it in younger or in elderly population.
