  • Potovalna driska : prepečevanje in zdravljenje = Traveler's diarrhoea: prevention and treatment
    Petrič, Primož ; Škraba, Anja
Traveler's diarrhoea is the most common health problem for tourists travellingto underdeveloped countries. Although the disease is most often mildand self-limited, tourists are often compelled to ... change their plans due to it. Most cases of traveller's diarrhoea are infectious in origin. The main source of infection is fecally contaminated food and, to a lesser extent, water. There are two most important ways of protection from traveller's diarrhoea. The basic way to avoid diarrhoea is to consider general recommendations regarding food consumption and hygiene during travelling. The second way is by means of antimicrobial drugs which offer the best protection, but their use is justified only in a limited group of people, mostly those who are immunocompromised or are expected to have a more severe course of disease. The prophylactic drugs of choice today are quinolones. In treatment of diarrhoea, the most important measure is substitution of fluids and electrolytes. With mild diarrhoea this is sufficient. In more serious cases the course of disease can be shortened and the symptoms relieved with drug therapy. Quinolones are drugs of choice in therapy of diarrhoea. Touristsare also advised to take loperamide on the trip.
