  • Zdravljenje stafilokoknih okužb = Treatment of staphylococcal infections
    Beović, Bojana
Antimicrobials used for the treatment of staphylococcal infections and treatment of some staphylococcal syndromes are described in the paper. The development of resistance has limited the options ... available for treatment of staphylococcal infections. Natural penicillin remains effective for only a very limited number of staphylococcal isolates, in most cases antistaphylococcal penicillins should be used to treat beta-lactamase positivestrains. Cephalosporins, beta-lactams combined with beta-lactamase inhibitors, macrolides and clindamycin may be used for the treatment of methicillin-sensitive staphylococcal infection. In some hospital settings methicillin resistant strains susceptible only to glycopeptides became prevalent. Co-trimoxazole may be used as a substitute for vancomycin for sensitive strains. Quinolones are effective against staphylococci, but their effectiveness is limited by rapid emergence of resistance. Aminoglycosides andrifampin are used in combinations with other antistaphylococcal drugs. Besides the antimicrobial susceptibility the choice of antistaphylococcal antibiotics and the duration of treatment depend on severity of the disease and the site of infection. Another important measure in the treatment of staphylococcal infection is drainage of the purulent foci, debridement of the necrotic tissue and withdrawal of the infected implants.
