    Two examples of the use of [sup] 13 C labelled tracers in the life sciences are presented where the isotopic composition of breath CO [sub] 2 is analysed:the detection of Helicobacter pylori ... infection in the upper gastrointestinal tract and the study of carbohydrate oxidation during prolonged endurance exercises. In the first case, the diagnostic method is based on the capability of H. pylori to decompose urea so breath CO [sub] 2 isenriched in [sup] 13 C soon after the demonstration of the tracer to infected patiens. The second examples is the analysis of the variation of isotopic composition of breath CO [sub] 2 due to changes in energetic substrate (muscle glycogen or blood carbohydrates) during prolonged endurance exercise.
