  • Carbon isotope composition in the Velenje lignite mine - its role in soft brown coal genesis
    Pezdič, Jože ...
ǂThe ǂcarbon isotope composition in the CH [sub] 4 and CO [sub] 2 are examined and to interpret the genesis of these two gases in the Velenje lignite. One of the most important topics is diagenetic ... evolution toward lignite homogenisation especially via defferential biochemical gelification processes and loss of the volatile matter. Methane and carbon dioxide as well as free nitrogen and carbon moxide are generated during lignite genesis and therefore partial pressures of these gases are formed within very porous and still very heterogeneous coal substance. Besides, carbon dioxide can be released from Triassic dolomites, which build up the basement of the intramontane Plio-Quarternary lignite-bearing basin. The carbon isotope data of gases from samples representing different lignite lithotypes have been analysed to find out which gas - lithotype system are potentially the most dangerous for coal and gas outbursts. The [delta] [sup] 13 C values of coal range from -27.4 to -22.6 %o and are in good correlation with defined lignite lithotypes. Mesaured methane samples have [delta] 13 C between -65.7 and -52.8%o, while the data for co [sub] 2 range from -6.3 to 2.1 %o. Knowledge of these systems represents an important contribution for predicting potentially less or potentially more dangerous areas of the undeground minig in the Velenje basin.
