    Background. In the article the normal walking pattern, i.e. the stance and theswing phase, is described. Relative joint positions, basic energy saving principles and basic pathological gait ... deviations are analysed. Conclusions. The most frequent cause of limping is pain, where the painful leg is unloaded by upper body shifting towards the weight bearing leg and with shortening of duration of the stance phase. Non-painful limping might be a consequence of muscle weakness, hip, knee or ankle contractures, limb length discrepancy or neurological disease. The observational gait analysis helps the clinician in decision making regarding the optimal treatment.
