  • Diagnostika, zdravljenje in preprečevanje okužb umetnih sklepov = Diagnosis, therapy and prevention of prosthetic joint infections
    Lotrič-Furlan, Stanka ; Meglič-Volkar, Jelka
Although infections of prosthetic joints are rare (approx. 1%), they representthe most serious complication following prosthesis implantation. Theyare classified into early and late postoperative, ... and hematogenous infections. The most common etiological agents in infections of prosthetic joints are Gram-positive bacteria, especially Staphylococcus aureus and S. epidermidis, which produce extracellular substances that promote bacterial adherence to the surface of foreign bodies. In order to prove the etiological agent, it is necessary to take the maximum possible number of samples for bacteriological examination. Treatment of prosthetic joint infection is extremely difficult, and there are no uniform recommendations. Frequently, prosthetic joint extraction is the only possible successful treatment. Among patients with a known etiological agent and without signs of loosened prosthetic joint, the combination of ciprofloxacin and rifampin could enable healing of infection even without removal of the prosthetic joint. Perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis is recommended prior to prosthetic joint implantation.
