  • Homocistein in periferna arterijska bolezen = Homocysteine and peripheral artery disease
    Kozak, Matija
Homocysteine is an intermediate of methionine metabolism. Patients with rare congenital defects associated with severely elevated homocysteine levels frequently develop arterial lesions in childhood. ... Moderate elevation of the homocysteine concentration has been proposed as an independent risk factor foratherosclerotic and thrombotic disease later in life, although there is no general consensus on this. There are several possible explanations for the deleterious effect of homocysteine on blood vessels. It is possible to lower blood homocysteine by treating such patients with folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12. Treatment is probably useful in high-risk patients with atherosclerosis, but definite recommendations for the management of hyperhomocysteinemia await the completion of randomized trials.
