  • Periferna arterijska okluzivna bolezen kot znanilec generalizirane ateroskleroze = Peripheral arterial occlusive disease as a marker of systemic atherosclerosis
    Žuran, Ivan
Peripheral arterial occlusive disease is a relatively common manifestation of the atherosclerotic process with a prevalence of up to 6.9% in patients aged between 45 and 74. The systemic nature of ... atherosclerosis is supported by the concomitant appearance of peripheral arterial occlusive disease and ischemic heart disease with a relative risk of 6.6, and cerebrovascular disease with a relative risk of 5.9. In 60% of patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease, additional ischemic heart disease and cerebrovascular disease can be detected. Asymptomatic cases of peripheral arterial occlusive disease can be identified by measuring the ankle/brachial pressure index in patients at risk of atherosclerosis. Noninvasive and invasive tests for the detection and risk stratification of ischemic heart disease in patients with symptomatic peripheral arterial occlusive disease, especially those planning to undergo surgical revascularization, are recommended. The presence and severity of carotid artery disease in these patients should be established by colour duplex ultrasound.
