  • Some aspects of the absolute construction in English and Slovene
    Lipovšek, Frančiška
Absolute constructions have the form of either non-finite or verbless clauses.A "verbless" absolute constructioncan be interpreted as a contracted non-finite clause with the present participle of ... either be or have as (covert)predicator. In English the interpretation with be is preferred, in Slovene that with have. The absolute construction is freely used in English whereas in Slovene it is possible only if it expresses the state of condition of the subject. In other cases a finite-clause equivalent is normaly used. Thepossibility of with-augmentation in Slovene depends on the meaning (existential vs. non-existetial) and on the form of the complement within the construction.
