Prokšelj, Katja ; Koželj, Mirta ; Podnar, Tomaž
Secundum-type atrial septal defect (ASD II) is a common congenital heart defect, which is frequently diagnosed for the first time in adulthood. The defect is detected using transthoracic and ... transesophageal echocardiography. The selection of treatment modality depends on the size of the defect and its morphological characteristics, as defined by echocardiography. This article presents the results of a study of the echocardiographic characteristics of ASD II in adults conducted at our institution. ASD II in adults are relatively large and morphologically very variable. Over time the defects increase in size and defect rims attenuate oreven disappear. Less than 50% of ASD II in adults fulfill echocardiographiccriteria for percutaneous closure using Amplatzer septal occluder.
