  • Murdering the American dream in Philip Roth's The human stain
    Blake, Jason
Philip Roth's The human stain about a black man who goes through life as a white man is a multi-themed novel that received mixed reviews. Just as the reviewers did not agree on its aesthetic merit, ... neither did they delineate a common theme to the novel. Among other things, Roth's novel is 1)allegory of the Clinton presidency and Monicagate, 2)an accusation that America has returned to rampant and distructive Puritanism, 3) a critique of political correctness, and 4) an examination of race and ethnicity in American society. This article shows how Roth uses these themes collectively to outline the death of individualism, the death of the American dream.
