  • Telesna dejavnost in zdravje = Physical activity and health
    Blinc, Aleš ; Bresjanac, Mara
Background. Due to technological development the average level of physical activity is decreasing among residents of developed countries, which is an important factor in the epidemic of obesity and ... metabolic syndrome. Results (findings). Although excessive physical exertion disrupts hormonal balance, harms the immune system and somewhat increases the risk of sudden cardiac death, the overwhelming majority of adaptations to regular exercise comprise health benefits. Sensitivity to insulin is increased, metabolism of triglycerides and cholesterol is improved, and the basal tone of the sympathetic nervous system is decreased, which all reduces coronary atherothrombotic events and cardio-vascular mortality. Physical exercise is linked to reduced risk of colon carcinoma, breast cancer and endometrial carcinoma. Regular physical activity prolongs life on average by about two years in comparison with sedentary population, but even more importantly, it preserves endurance and power necessary for independent living well into in advanced age. Physical exercise reduces symptoms of depression and improves the perceived level of satisfaction. Conclusions. In order to achieve the metabolic and psychological benefits of exercise, it is necessary to engage inat least a half hour of moderately intense activity on most days of the week, but daily physical activity is even better.
