Dental aplasia is a developmental anomaly in which a dental germ has failed todevelop, resulting in absence of a tooth. These anomalies are classified according to the number of missing teeth as ... hypodontia, oligodontia or anodontia. Orthodontic treatment of missing maxillary lateral incisors includes closing the gap by moving the canine to the position of the lateral incisor and the first premolar to the position of the canine. The second option is to maintain the space for subsequent placement of an implant or someother form of prosthetic treatment. The main factors that influence the choice of therapy are space conditions in the upper dental arch and the relationship between the jaws. In patients with class 2 malocclusion, crowdingand a suitable shape and size of canines and first premolars, closing the gap is generally the treatment of choice. A canine can be an optimal substitute for a missing lateral incisor if it resembles in colour the centralincisor, is narrow at the cemento-enamel junction and has an appropriately shaped labial surface. We present a patient with bilaterally missing maxillary lateral incisors who was treated with orthodontic space closure and reshaping of the canine crowns.
