  • Errors in decision making in social systems - application of a computer simulation

    A relatively recent area of scientific inquiry is the exploration of the dynamics of complex systems. The use of computer software such as NetLogo presents a powerful way to explore such systems and ... analyze errors in decisionmaking process when dealing with the systems survival. A complex social multi-agent environment has been developed and tested on 30 participants of different age and different educational and occupational status. The participants' task was to keep the system in equilibrium through different parameter adjustments involved in the control of the behaviour of three species interacting with each other. Several quantitative measures were proposed in measuring the actions and behavioural errors such asdeficient goal decomposition, deficient goal balancing, and inconsideration of a reality model. The connection between the participants' problem solving style and cognitive style of impulsivity-reflectivity and efficiency-inefficiency, measured through the computerized version of Kagan's MFFT, was then analyzed. Significant correlations between efficiency on MFFT and the number of total actions (social simulation) as well as the number of initial actions were obtained. The inefficiency on MFFT and the amount of contradictory actions correlated positively. Our conclusions suggest a further development of such models in the research of psychological phenomena.
