  • Subgingivalna mikroflora pri bolnikih s sladkorno boleznijo tipa 1 = Subgingival microflora in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus
Schara, Rok ; Skalerič, Eva, 1975- ; Seme, Katja, 1966-
Background: Diabetes mellitus affects the status of periodontal tissues. The latter, in turn, affects glycaemic control in diabetic patients. The aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of ... periodontal pathogens in subgingival plaque of diabetic patients with periodontal disease, and to assess the correlation between periodontal pathogens and metabolic control. Patients and methods: Twenty-one patients with type 1 diabetes were included in the study. Metabolic control was evaluated by measuring the patients' HbA 1c leveis. Subgingival plaque samples were tested for the presence of five periodontal pathogens: Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa), Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg), Prevotella intermedia (Pi), Tannerella forsythia (Tf), and Treponema dentico/a (Td). The bacteria were detected by multiplex polymerase chain reaction, followed by hybridization against speci es specific DNA probes using a microlDent test. Results: Forty-two plaque samples were tested. Tf was found in 48%, Td in 31 %, Pg in 26%, Pi in 9%, andAa in 7% of the samples. The most frequent combination of periodontal pathogens found in the same sample was Tf and Td. Patients harbouring this combination of pathogens had significantly higher HbA 1 c levels than patientswho did not harbour these two bacteria. No such correlation was found for Pg, Pi and Aa. Conclusions: Tf and Td are the most frequent pathogens found in periodontal pockets of diabetic patients, and they affect the level of glycaemic control.
