  • The communicative approach to foreign language teaching: naturally rational or rationally natural? : a picture history of ELT
    Skela, Janez
The purpose of the article is to highlight some basic features of the Communicative Approach to foreign language learning and teaching. The Communicative Approach has been chosen because it is the ... most important advance in FLT in the 20th century, and because it constitutes the most comprehensive approach to language learning. Comparison and contrast enhance our comprehension of any phenomenon, and since the Communicative Approach was not born in a void we cannot hope to comprehend its full force and how to implement it without a historical analysis. The article thus traces the historical development of the Communicative Approach, and - with the help of Apicture history of ELT - shows the coming-together of the two traditions of language learning and teaching: (1) the applied linguistic approach of the Reform Movement (Rational - the "monastery" tradition) and (2) the monolingualmethodology of the DM (Natural - the "marketplace" tradition). Theconclusion outlines ten scenarios that are likely to shape the teaching of second languages in the next decades of the new millennium.
