  • Electronic citizens ? : young people, television news and the limits of politics
    Buckingham, David
Young people are often seen to be alienated from conventional forms of politics, and from the news media. Yet the nature and consequences of this alienation have yet to be fully explored. In moving ... beyond traditional notionsof the media's role in political socialisation, we need to reconsider how young people use news media, and indeed what we mean by 'politics' in the first place. This article is based on research conducted in inner-city schools in Britain and the United States. It considers how young people (aged 10-17) interpret political communications on television, and how these interpretations are established and negotiated in small-group talk. The paper offers a summary of key themes raised in the research, including: young people's overall orientations towards, and definitions of, the field of 'politics'; their responses to the formal strategies of different news programmes; and the nature and limitations of 'critical viewing'. The paper concludes by discussing the general implications of the research for citizenship education.
