    This doctoral dissertation investigates German phraseological units in children's and youth literary works by the Austrian writer Christine Nöstlingerand their translations into Slovene. The analysis ... is based on children's and youth literary works that are intended for young readers aged between 7 and 12. The main purpose of this analysis is to present phraseological units places in a text from two perspectives: how phraseological units influence the context in the source language and how they are placed in the target language according to the translation method and according to the context. The dissertation consists of nine chapters. Chapter 1, written in German and Slovene, introduces the research objectives, describes the research domain, presents the methodology and the structure of the dissertation. Chapter 2 provides an overview of research on phraseological units and the defining criteria and typologies used in German and Slovene traditions of phraseological studies and presents an overview of the textual dimensions of phraseological units, particularly in the children's and youth literary works. Chapter 3 explains the differences between contrastive and translation approaches in phraseology and presents thetranslation methods. Chapters 4 ind 5 represent the core of the analysis and its results. Chapter 4 introduces the topic of the investigation, the themes in each literary work, characters and language that are typical of Nöstlinger, explains the typology and the role of phraseological units according to their textual functions, which are categorized as accumulation, repetition, paraphrase, modification, semantic steering of the phraseological unit by context. Chapter 5 shows 1045 phraseological units from the source language and 774 phraseological units from the target language and discusses some examples of the translations according to different types of phraseological units and to different textual functions which decreased in the target language by 60%. Chapters 6-8 include abstracts in German, Slovene and English. Translation is not mere mastery of some mechanical skills, but a thorough knowledge and culture combined with an acute awareness of the role of the situation and collaboration in translation. Along with textual elements, translators need to recognize, know and take into consideration the role of phraseological units in context. Translation of phraseological units in lterary works is a special field requiring special knowledge that traslators have to become aware of.
