  • Comprehensive water resources management as an integral part of sustainable development in the coastal area of Slovenia
    Umek, Tomaž
The purpose of this article is to present water management activities as an important integral part of sustainable regional management. In recent years, there has been a turn in the understanding of ... water management, i.e. not only as an infrastructural activity, but as a comprehensive treatment of the environment and habitat. The basic objective of comprehensive water management is to maintain permanent balance between water protection and rational use of waters for the needs of entire society. The preservation of natural resources and environmental vitality, including the protection of social and economic welfare, is becoming the basic principle of sustainable development of modern society. Internationally adopted natural and environmental protection strategies, protocols and conventions, signed by Slovenia, commit us to introduce the principle of sustainability in our water management system as well. The set objectives can be achieved on condition that the water management system is suitably organised and the relevant 'water' legislation is adopted as soon as possible.
