    Background. New surgical techniques have an important impact on diagnostic issues and treatment guidelines. Patients and methods. We studied the impact of laparoscopic cholecystectomy by surveying ... 2,311 cases operated on by this approach between 1988 and 1996. Results. over a period of 3 years, the rate oflaparoscopic operations increased to 90-91% and the number of choledochotomies decreased, the overall number of cholecystectomies remaining unchanged. Conclusion. Only by a step by step introduction of laparoscopic techniques performed by experienced surgeons can the optimum rate of laparoscopic cholecystectomies be attained in a relatively short time. In order to improve the rate of right decisions for conversion, a larger number of open operations will have to be done by residents.
