    Prevalence of smoking and alcohol consumption among 612 randomly selected pupils of secondary schools in the region of Prekmurje was investigated. 23% of secondary pupils are smokers, girls being in ... slight majority. Girls with educated parents smoke less than the boys. Significantly more smokers are of urban origin. 71,6% of boys and 56,3% of girls consume alcohol. In the first year of schooling 22,9% of pupils consume alcohol but in the fourth year the share is alredy 80%. Alcohol consuming was not influenced by parents education. Significantly more urban pupils consume alcohol only at times. An example of health educational programme for the prevention of smoking in pupils from 1st - 8th class of primary schools, and a supplementary programme for the secondary pupils is given.
