  • Redefining citizenship education : common parallels and challenges

    This article identifies emerging parallels and challenges in citizenship education. It sets citizenship education within the broader context of forces bringing seemingly relentless change to society. ... The article is built around three central questions, namely what is citizenship and citizenship education, why is citizenship education so prominent in modern society, and what are the common issues and challenges for citizenship education? It argues that debates about the nature of modern society and the role of education have caused the concepts of citizenship and citizenship education to be fundamentally reviewed and redefined over the past two decades. The review has thrown up a series of 'new dimensions' and challenges for citizenship, including those concerning diversity, location, social rights and participation. These have had a knock-on effect in terms of how citizenship education responds to these common issues and challenges. The article concludes by listing these common issues and challenges and suggesting ways in which they can be approached.
