  • Democracy and diversity
    Verschueren, Jef
This paper starts from the observation that in certain European countries the term 'democracy' has come to assume an adjectival status rather than to function as a full-content word. Thus some ... parties, at the extreme-right end of the political spectrum, are said to be 'non-democratic'. All other parties are by definition 'democratic', an attribute that hinges on negative contrastiveness, apparently not being in need of substantiation itself. Focusing on the argumentation needed to maintain the non-democratic nature of the extreme right, it turns out that it usually refers to attitudes to diversity, variously described as open/closed, (in)tolerant, showing or lacking 'decency'. The tolerant majority's orientation towards diversity, however, will be shown to be bent to a perpetuation of homogeneity or, rather,of various juxtaposed homogeneities. Evidence for this is found in educational, political, and institutional practice. One of the symptoms of this state of affairs is the frequent talk of 'shattered identities'.
