  • The correlation between cultural capital and learning English as a foreign language : masterʹs thesis

    The following thesis analyses the correlation between cultural capital and learning English as a foreign language. It consists of two parts. The first part examines the theory of cultural capital and ... its application in research. The theoretical part also addresses the factors for successful foreign language learning and acquisition. The practical part is based on a survey that explores the correlation between respondents' cultural capital and learning English as a foreign language in Slovenian primary schools. The concept of cultural capital was first used in 1977 by French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu who explored the correlation between children's socioeconomic position and their school success. He was one of the first sociologists who examined the relationship between culture and class. Apart from economic capital which is objectified in material form, Bourdieu identified another two forms of capital: social and cultural capital. It is the latter that has mostly been explored in the context of education. The primary objective of the following thesis is to place the notion of cultural capital into the context of learning a foreign language with a critical approach based on existing cultural capital studies.
