Purpose
The purpose of this study was to compare the language, cognitive, and speech in noise (SiN) perception abilities of children with cochlear implants (CIs) to those of their peers with NH by ...grouping them according to their implantation period (12–18 months/19–24 months) and unilateral/bilateral CI use.
Methods
The sample comprised 50 children with cochlear implants (CIs) and 20 children with normal hearing (NH), ages 6–9 years. Children’s language, cognitive, and speech in noise (SiN) perception skills were assessed.
Results
Children with CIs between 12 and 18 months and 19 and 24 months performed more poorly than children with NH on language, verbal memory (VM), verbal-short-term memory (V-STM), verbal working memory (V-WM), rapid naming, and speech in noise (SiN) perception abilities measures (
p
< 0.001). In addition, children with CIs between 19 and 24 months performed worse on rapid naming and V-WM tasks than children with CIs between 12 and 18 months (
p
< 0.017). Children with unilateral and bilateral CI performed more poorly than children with NH on language, VM, V-STM, V-WM, rapid naming, and SiN perception abilities assessments (
p
< 0.001). Additionally children with unilateral CI users performed poorly than children with bilateral CI users on SiN perception (
p
< 0.017).
Conclusions
In children with congenital hearing loss (CHL), cochlear implantation between 12 and 18 months or sequential bilateral implantation is not sufficient for these children to perform like their NH peers in language, cognitive, and SiN perception abilities. In addition, intervention approaches should focus not only on increasing language skills, but also on cognitive abilities.
Hydroponic systems provide a highly advantageous environment for cultivating green leafy vegetables. Among these advantages, there is a significant acceleration in harvest compared to conventional ...farming methods, the attainment of high yields, enhanced leaf coloring, increased nutritional content, and improved sweetness, all of which are crucial factors. However, a particular issue known as tip burn is encountered when cultivating, especially Yedikule (Romaine) type lettuce in hydroponic systems. This study investigates various calcium dosages applied via foliar spray to mitigate tip burn on Thespian and Suntred lettuce varieties (green and red Romaine mini types). Different calcium dosages were employed for both lettuce varieties. This experiment examined various parameters for both lettuce types, including plant height, root length, stem diameter, plant age, dry weight, root dry and fresh weight, macro and micronutrient content, dry matter, and total yield. The results indicate that combining foliar calcium and adequate ventilation effectively mitigates tipburn. This research emphasizes the significance of such a combined approach in preventing tip burn in hydroponically grown lettuce, specifically Thespian and Suntred varieties.
Purpose – The aim of this study is to determine the personality traits of consumers and to understand the effect of hedonic consumption and to examine its multi-dimensional structure. In the ...literature, there are studies on the subject of personality traits in researches related to consumption and consumer behavior. However, in these studies, it is seen that consumption associates A and B personality or focuses on unplanned, impulse purchasing. In this sense, the study is important in terms of examining the effect of five-factor personality traits on hedonic consumption. Design/methodology/approach – In this study, Five Factor Personality Inventory and hedonic consumption scale were used, and thus, the effects of personality types on the sub-dimensions of hedonic consumption were tried to be determined. The research was carried out in the form of a questionnaire in two shopping centers in Çankaya, the most populous district of Ankara, between May and September 2019. The research participants consisted of 370 people over the age of 18 who declared that they had purchasing power. In line with the literature examined, it was acted with the assumption that hedonic motives predominate rather than utilitarian motives in consumers' shopping and that they make consumption to enjoy. For this reason, especially a product group is not specified, and recent shopping experiences are considered in order to analyze general consumption behaviors. Findings – The findings show that the personality types of consumers have various effects on hedonic consumption dimensions. Especially the extroverted personality trait has been found to have an effect on more than one sub-dimension of hedonic consumption. Discussion – The results obtained from this research show that the correct determination of the personality traits of the consumers who shop with hedonic motives and the determination of the marketing mix elements for this purpose can provide a competitive advantage to the enterprises.
After auditory brainstem implant (ABI) surgery, stimulation of certain cranial nerves may result in a non-auditory response, and the electrodes that stimulate these nerves may be deactivated. The ...goals of this study are to compare the number of active electrodes in the initial activation and the last fitting, to investigate non-auditory response types and their frequency as a result of non-auditory stimulation, to compare the placements of deactivated electrodes as a result of non-auditory stimulation in the initial activation and the last fitting.
The computer software system was used to perform a retrospective analysis of the fitting data of 69 ABI users who underwent auditory brainstem implant surgery between January 1997 and January 2019. The non-auditory response types, deactive electrodes, and the positioning of the deactive electrodes horizontally and vertically were recorded in these users during the initial activation and the last fitting.
There was no statistically significant difference between the number of active electrodes in the initial activation and the last fitting. The proportion of the users with deactive electrodes in the initial activation and the last fitting was not statistically significant different. In the horizontal and vertical placement classification, the placement of the deactive electrodes was not statistically different between initial activation and last fitting. The most common type of non-auditory response was facial nerve stimulation at the initial activation and no auditory perception at the last fitting. According to the difference between the number of active and deactive electrodes in the initial activation and the last fitting, as well as the auditory and non-auditory responses, it was found that the ABI users were statistically different between the initial activation and the last fitting.
The results of this study show that not only auditory but also non-auditory responses occur in most ABI users. In addition, to the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to examine the frequencies of non-auditory response types, and the placement of the electrodes that cause these responses according to horizontal and vertical classifications.
Anti-tumor necrosis factor agents are widely used in treating ankylosing spondylitis, but they increase the risk of infection by suppressing the immune response. Therefore, physicians should be ...careful about recurrent infections in patients under anti-tumor necrosis factor agents.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relations between functional hearing, language, social, bilateral coordination and manual dexterity skills in children with early cochlear implants ...(CIs).
Thirty children with CIs were included in this study. The manual dexterity and bilateral coordination development of the participants were evaluated with Manual Dexterity and Bilateral Coordination subtests of Bruininks-Oseretsky Motor Proficiency-2 (BOT-2). Their language skills were assessed by the Test of Early language Development-3. To assess the functional hearing of participants the Functioning After Pediatric Cochlear Implantation scale (FAPCI) was administered their caregivers. Also, the Social Skills Evaluation Scale was administered to participants' teachers to asses their social skills.
There were significant correlations between participants' receptive and expressive language skills, Manual Dexterity, and FAPCI scores (p < 0.05). There were also significant relationships between the SSES and FAPCI scores of the participants (p < 0.05). However, the Bilateral Coordination subtest did not show any significant correlation with any of the measurements (p > 0.05).
The results suggest that the language, manual dexterity and functional hearing abilities of children with CIs are closely related. Although, there were no significant correlations between all of the measurement, it is important to look beyond hearing and speech evaluations to assess the whole child.

During the two polar world system in cold war period, Muslim countries under Non-Alignment Movement had different ideological agendas. Socialist interpretations of Islam became very popular with Arab ...nationalism. One of the interpretations is Universal Third World Theorem of Muammar Gaddafi in Libya. The Green book of Gaddafi was showing a revolt and stance of his ideas against imperialism. As an Arab nation, there are strong emphasis on socialistic iterations in Green Book where Islamic socialistic discourse applied in some parts. In this paper, we first provide historical information about Libya and theoretical background of Islamic socialism explained by providing brief literature review. The final chapter of article devoted on to proper information about Green Book by analyzing its solutions to problems in developing world.
Congenital toxoplasmosis and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) are two devastating clinical entities of the newborn. There is little information in the literature about the interaction between ...congenital infections and retinal vascular development at the fetal stage, and none regarding the relationship between ROP and congenital toxoplasmosis. In this report, we present two premature newborns diagnosed with congenital toxoplasmosis with ocular involvement, accompanied by ROP with interrupted retinal vascularization, peripheral avascular regions, and retinal detachment. The aim of this paper is to emphasize the possibility of ROP and congenital toxoplasmosis coexistence wherein one condition may mask the other and make it difficult to distinguish the cause of retinal detachment. Timely management with medical and surgical treatment of congenital toxoplasmosis and ROP could save eyes and vision in those cases.
In this study, mindful attention awareness (MAA) and cognitive flexibility (CF) were considered as structures that protect the mental health of teacher trainees. The main purpose of the study is to ...examine the relationships between mindful attention awareness, cognitive flexibility levels, and mental symptoms of teacher trainees. The sample is consisted of 396 teacher trainees from Turkey. Data were collected by Mindful Attention Awareness Scale, Cognitive Flexibility Inventory, Brief Symptom Inventory. The model was predictive associational survey model. Data analyses were made by Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple linear regression techniques. Significant negative correlations were found between mental symptoms and both mindful attention awareness and cognitive flexibility, especially its control sub-dimension. As a result of regression analysis mindful attention awareness and cognitive flexibility control sub-dimensions together explain 31% of mental symptoms. MAA co-operates with CF as mental health protective structures, and the growth of mindful attention awareness creates positive effects on cognitive flexibility.
In the literature, the efficacy of virtual glasses on acute pain and anxiety has been investigated, and no study has been found on its effect on pain and anxiety during episiotomy repair.
To ...determine the efficacy of virtual glasses app lication in pain and anxiety during episiotomy repair.
Randomized controlled trial design was used.
The study included 120 women who were primiparous and pregnant: 40 in the control group and 80 in the experimental groups (virtual g lasses and skin to skin contact).
Data were collected using Descriptive Information Form, the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and the State Anxiety Inventory. In experimental groups, virtual glasses and skin to skin contact were applied during episio tomy repair by the researcher, and they were not applied to the control group. The VAS and State Anxiety Inventory were used to assess pain and anxiety in all groups before and after application. In the statistical analysis of the data, the SPSS 23.0 packa ge program was used. In all tests, p < .005 wa s considered statistically significant.
Immediately post inter vention, the women in the experimental groups had significantly decreased anxiety and pain during episiotomy repair. Comparing three metho ds, the virtual glasses significantly reduced anxiety and pain after application (p < .05).
Virtual glasses are more effective than skin to skin contact and control methods in decreasing pain and reducing anxiety during episiotomy repair. Add itionally, virtual glasses may reduce the need for pharmacological medication due to this reduction in pain and anxiety during episiotomy repair.
