Intestinal ischemia causes an inflammatory response that may become intense by reperfusion and result in bacterial translocation. Intestinal immunoglobulin A is known to be a barrier against ...bacterial translocation. Lycopene is a compound with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. We hypothesized that lycopene has positive effects in ischemia-reperfusion of the intestine through the intestinal IgA.
Twenty-eight Wistar albino rats were separated into four groups: sham, control, lycopene-administered-before-ischemia (L-pre), and lycopene-administered-after-reperfusion groups. Histopathologic changes, intestinal immunoglobulin A levels, and bacterial translocation were evaluated after the ischemia-reperfusion period of 0.5-12 h.
Histopathologic changes, intestinal immunoglobulin A, and bacterial translocation levels in the L-pre group were similar to those in the sham group. Administration of the lycopene after reperfusion showed just a slight protective effect. However, the L-pre group had significantly fewer histopathologic changes when compared with changes in the control (P = 0.011). Intestinal immunoglobulin A level in the L-pre group was found to be higher than that in the control group (P = 0.014). Bacterial translocation levels in the blood and mesenteric lymph nodes, in the L-pre group, were lower than those in the control group (P = 0.0027 and P = 0.0097, respectively).
Lycopene limited intestinal damage, reduced loss of intestinal immunoglobulin A and decreased bacterial translocation when administered before the ischemia-reperfusion injury.
•Administration of lycopene before ischemia restricted intestinal mucosal damage•Lycopene reduced loss of IgA in the intestinal lumen and mucosa•Lycopen reduced bacterial translocation when used before intestinal ischemia
The fermented liquid sector is developing all over the world due to its contribution to health. Our study has contributed to the debate about whether industrially manufactured fermented liquids live ...up to their claims by analyzing pathogens and beneficial bacteria using a 16S rRNA sequencing technique called metagenomic analysis. Paenibacillus, Lentibacillus, Bacillus, Enterococcus, Levilactobacillus, and Oenococcus were the most abundant bacterial genera observed as potential probiotics. Pseudomonas stutzeri, Acinetobacter, and Collimonas, which have plant-growth-promoting traits, were also detected. The fact that we encounter biocontroller bacteria that promote plant growth demonstrates that these organisms are widely used in foods and emphasizes the necessity of evaluating them in terms of public health. Their potential applications in agriculture may pose a danger to food hygiene and human health in the long term, so our data suggest that this should be evaluated.
Recently, there have been significant developments in investigating the quality perception and aesthetic behavior
of the towel fabrics due to the developments in objective evaluation techniques in ...parallel with the technology.
When bending properties are evaluated especially in terms of towel fabric comfort and towel quality perception,
it is the main parameter that affects the selection of raw material, design and appearance of the textile material. In
this study, towel samples with different fiber content (cotton, modal, bamboo, tencel, polyester etc.), yarn structure
(carded, combed, open-end), yarn count, pile height, weight values were collected. By measuring the bending
rigidity of towel samples, the effects of towel samples with different fiber content on both quality perception and
bending rigidity were investigated.

Here we report three cases of flap-related complications following temporal inverted internal limiting membrane (ILM) flap technique for the repair of macular holes (MH). The first case showed a flap ...closure pattern in which the MH completely closed at 2 months spontaneously. The second case showed early anatomical and functional improvement provided by an immediate closure of the MH but developed flap contracture and nasally located epiretinal membrane (ERM) at postoperative 18 months. There was no functional deterioration, thus no further intervention was required. In the third case, early postoperative flap dislocation was observed and an additional surgery to reposition the flap was needed. The flap closure pattern observed with inverted ILM flap techniques may represent the ongoing healing process of large MHs and may be related to delayed spontaneous anatomical closure. ILM flap contracture and ERM formation may be a harmless long-term complication. Dislocation of the ILM flap is an unexpected early postoperative complication that may necessitate a second surgery for flap repositioning.

The aim of this study is to introduce a decision framework that integrates Quality Function Deployment (QFD) methodology and topic modelling to facilitate analysing online reviews, that is, a digital ...source of voice of the customer (VoC), to extract the true customer needs for developing a product/service. Within the framework, after collecting and preprocessing customer reviews, Latent Dirichlet Allocation is used for grouping them as topics. Most representative reviews are determined based on corresponding topic distributions, and QFD methodology is employed to clarify these reviews and reveal true customer needs. For demonstration, this framework was used to analyse 83,545 reviews on Italian restaurants gathered from Yelp.com via topic modelling with a more objective perspective. The number of documents to be examined was decreased by approximately 95%. Thereupon the completion time of customer voice table, one of the most important tools in QFD studies, reduced dramatically. Besides, text mining process is enhanced for retrieving meaningful information from customer reviews by using QFD tools and their tailored approach. This study is the first attempt that integrates QFD and topic modelling in order to increase the efficiency of the VoC clarification process.
Objective: The aim of the study was to retrospectively analyze the patients who underwent thyroidectomy at a tertiary academic center regarding their surgical indications, histopathological ...diagnosis, and surgical complications. Methods: The study included a total of 739 consecutive patients who underwent lobectomy, total thyroidectomy, or completion thyroidectomy performed under intraoperative nerve monitoring (IONM) at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery of Dokuz Eylul University between January 2009 and December 2019. Demographic data of the patients, preoperative clinicopathological characteristics, postoperative complications, characteristics of surgery and histopathological results were evaluated. Results: There were 619 patients in the primary surgery and 120 patients in the revision surgery groups. Indications for surgery were suspicion of malignancy in 486, multinodular goiter in 214, and hyperthyroidism in 39 patients. Final histopathological evaluation of specimens revealed malignancy in a total of 507 (68.6%) patients. Rates of transient and permanent hypocalcemia were 7.3% (54/739) and 2.2% (16/739) in the whole group, while this was 6.6% (41/619) and 1.5% (9/619), respectively, among primary total thyroidectomy patients. There were 61 (8.3%) patients with transient recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) paralysis (unilateral in 60 patients, bilateral in one patient) and five (0.7%) patients with permanent unilateral RLN paralysis as postoperative complications. Rates for postoperative hematoma, seroma, wound infection and chylous fistula were 2.2%, 3.7%, 0.1%, and 0.5%, respectively. Conclusion: Our results support the safety of thyroid surgery performed under IONM in tertiary academic centers. Every institution should document and share its own results to properly inform its patients preoperatively. Keywords: Thyroidectomy, hypocalcemia, vocal cord paralysis, recurrent laryngeal nerve
The purpose of this study is to examine whether value orientations of adolescents, gender and state of parents’ education predict aggression. The study was designed as predictive correlational ...research model. The participants consisted of 890 adolescents. Data were collected by Aggression Scale, Portrait Values Scale and a personal information questionnaire. Data were analyzed through mean, Pearson correlation and hierarchical regression analysis. Results indicated that there was significant negative correlation between aggression levels and value orientations of adolescent. It was found that value orientations, gender and parents’ education level together explained 18.7% of the variance of aggression in adolescence. Findings showed that success, universalism, benevolence and education level of father significantly contributed to prediction of aggression in adolescents while the contributions of the security, conformity, self-direction, gender and education level of mother were not significant.
Three novel azo-azomethine ligands have been synthesized in an accomplished one-pot synthesis protocol. The mononuclear Ru(II) complexes of these azo-azomethine dyes were prepared and characterized ...by the combination of elemental analyses, IR, UV–Visible spectroscopy and 1H13C NMR spectra. Solid state structures of 3, 4 and 7 were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The electrochemical and photoluminescence properties of the compounds were studied. The 1931 CIE (x,y) chromaticity coordinates of the ligands and their metal complexes were investigated and the x, y values of the compounds were found to be close to the National Television Standard Committee (NTSC) standard. Quantum chemical calculation of related ligands and complexes are performed at B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) and B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) (LANL2DZ) level in vacuum.
In addition, the azo-azomethine ligands and their Ru(II) complexes were evaluated for both their in-vitro antibacterial activity by the disc diffusion method and antioxidant properties using ferric reduction power, DPPH free radical, and ABTS cation radical scavenging activities as in vitro. Radical scavenging activities of compounds 5–7 were found higher than BHT, BHA, and Trolox used as positive controls. Compounds 2–4 antioxidant capacities were lower than the positive controls. Finally, the new azo-azomethine dyes and their Ru(II) complexes were investigated for their in vitro antiproliferative activities against non-small cell lung cancer cells (H2126), prostate adenocarcinoma cells (PC3) and breast cancer cells (MCF7) in vitro. Cell proliferation test were performed as dose-dependent assays at 200 μM. The new azo-azomethine ligands and their Ru(II) complexes have shown anticancer activity on the studied cell lines after 24 h exposure to 200 μM compounds. However, the activities of the compounds are much lower than 5-Fu.
