U radu se detaljno analiziraju životi i iskustva žena koje doživljavaju beskućništvo s posebnim osvrtom na njihove “puteve” u beskućništvo i “prekretnice” koje su do njega dovele. Istraživanje se ...temelji na kvalitativnim materijalima prikupljenim u sklopu CSRP projekta Exploring Homelessness and Pathways to Social Inclusion: A Comparative Study of Contexts and Challenges in Swiss and Croatian Cities (br.
The article analyses in detail the lives and experiences of women who are homeless, with a special focus on their “pathways” to homelessness and the “turning points” that led to it. The research is based on qualitative materials collected as part of an international project on homelessness. CSRP: Exploring Homelessness and Pathways to Social Inclusion: A Comparative Study of Contexts and Challenges in Swiss and Croatian Cities (No. IZHRZO_180631/1). It relies on ethnographic fieldwork, participant observation, and semi-structured and walk-along interviews conducted with homeless women. In addition to their own explanations, this research holistically analyses their biographies to understand how various challenges permeated their lives, eventually leading to homelessness. This article presents three case studies that provide detailed insight into the complex combination of circumstances, experiences, and events that lead to homelessness. It also shows the heterogeneity of their “paths” and how the interaction and culmination of individual challenges and structural factors in the Croatian context can lead to the most extreme forms of homelessness. Finally, this article demonstrates that efforts to address and prevent homelessness require a much more detailed and nuanced understanding of the underlying issues, needs, vulnerabilities, and processes that interact to culminate in the experience of homelessness.
This new study explores pathways into homelessness and identifies ‘turning points’ among persons currently experiencing rooflessness. Besides their explanations, this research also holistically ...examines individual biographies to see how other issues have permeated their lives. Although the reasons people described for becoming homeless were complex and multi-layered, the study identifies six pathways into homelessness, as well as some turning points. This research shows that pathways into homelessness do not develop in isolation from life circumstances, but rather that life pathways and pathways into homelessness were closely interwoven into a web, making sustainable exits from homelessness more difficult.
Literature on how Roma families cope with precarious living conditions and social exclusion remains very limited. Out of all the national minorities and ethnic groups in Croatia, the Roma undoubtedly ...have the most difficult social position characterised by a high degree of poverty and social exclusion. Based on recent fieldwork, the aim of this article is to explore the coping strategies different Roma populations in Croatia employ to meet their everyday needs. Acknowledging the different forms of interconnected, interdependent and context-specific capital that together constitute advantage and disadvantage in society (Bourdieu 1986), this study analyses Roma’s access to economic, cultural, social, and symbolic capital. Along with discrimination and racism, Roma’s limited access to different forms of capital explicates the necessity of household-based, work-based, kin-based and aid-based strategies among some families living in poverty, especially in light of stricter social welfare policy measures that have been recently introduced.
Da bismo potpunije razumjeli životne situacije žena koje žive u neadekvatnim i/ili nesigurnim životnim uvjetima, u ovoj se studiji istražuju njihovi stambeni putovi u prošlosti. Konkretno, studija ...istražuje njihove stambene nestabilnosti i pokuπava pratiti povijest njihova kretanja u i kroz viπe ili manje vidljiva mjesta beskuÊniπtva i stambene iskljuËenosti.
Previous research suggested that women and men experience their leisure time differently (i.e. time not committed to the labour force, domestic caregiving, or personal care). In relation to ...quantitative differences, studies worldwide have confirmed that a gender gap in leisure time use exists even though both women's and men's lives may be enriched through opportunity for leisure. In this article, we examine the organisation of time in the domains of leisure and its gender dimensions in Croatia. To determine whether demographic characteristics (e.g. education, age, employment) and household organisation (e.g. presence of children, time spent doing housework, number of household activities) account for considerable variation in leisure time, we focus on married and cohabiting individuals. Apart from gender differences, we will also investigate whether there are regional differences in leisure time use. An explanation of forces that result in gendered and regional differences of leisure time use in Croatia is discussed.
THE QUALITY OF HOMELESSNESS SERVICES: AN OVERVIEW OF THE CURRENT SITUATION AND CHALLENGES IN CROATIA Although homelessness is a multifaceted phenomenon that has aroused interest in the Croatian ...scientific community over the last decade, the quality of homelessness services has not been explored so far. Based on a qualitative research that included key participants in the homelessness sector, this theme is problematized through various aspects of service quality. Following an introduction and a description of the method used, this paper describes the legal regulation of quality of services for homeless people, as well as the problems that homelessness services providers encounter in practice in relation to legal documents. More specifically, this paper analyses: the availability of services for homeless people, financing models, quality of accommodation facilities, quality of social services and quality control. All these aspects of service quality are supplemented by a number of first-hand practical experiences as well as some examples of good practice. Key words: homeless people, social services, (night) shelters, regulation, service quality.

A number of studies argue that marriage migration (migration for the purposes of, or following marriage) invokes numerous anxieties, strategies and ambitions and may therefore be seen as potentially ...problematic and controversial. More positively, past research has shown that migration can be an emancipatory experience and may be celebrated as a form of agency as women’s marriage migration may be the most efficient and socially accepted means available to disadvantaged women to achieve a measure of social and economic mobility. Conversely, marriage migration may also be an experience of disempowerment because in-marrying wives once in their new environment are often unfamiliar with local customs and family traditions and frequently experience language barriers. Overall, Roma marriage migration in both intra and transnational contexts has been largely neglected as a research theme. This paper offers a preliminary study, based on information from Roma NGO representatives and public officials in Croatia, which attempts to narrow this gap in the literature. We are particularly interested in how Roma NGOs understand the situation of early marriage migration/arranged marriages and give some examples of their advocacy in the area of children’s/women’s rights. Using an intersectionality lens, this study maps out the various circumstances in which Roma women and migration fuse together as entangled trajectories producing situations of vulnerability (and possibly of opportunities). Specifically, this paper explores how ethnicity, gender, age, class, legal status and their intersections are associated with vulnerabilities. In order to examine the multiplicity of factors shaping Roma women’s experience as migrants to Croatia, this article discusses some of the challenges and opportunities that they face in Croatia. This study shows that there is a need for further empirical research on the intersection of marriage and migration from an ethnic/gender/age/class perspective to show how discrimination is multiplied.
This article attempts to show how biographical research can be used to understand experiences of crisis among homeless people and how their personal biographies uncover different contexts and ...processes. Following an overview of biographical research, an analysis of the post-transition period and
homelessness will be discussed. ' is article specifically explores and traces the social transformations and crises in personal biographies obtained through ethnographic research with people who sleep at homeless shelters throughout Croatia. Findings show how biographical research facilitates a fuller
examination of their homelessness experiences and the structural similarities that underlie these experiences.
