Abstract Objective The goal of our study was to investigate and to identify the existence of proton pump in different parts of larynx. The presence of acidic content in this area is known to be ...connected to several laryngeal diseases. It is mostly developed by upward recurrence of acidic gastric content, but there are some signs that the acid can be produced in the larynx as well, because of the proton pump activity in laryngeal mucosa. Methods The study was performed on two types of specimens: (1) 50 cadaver larynges and (2) 11 surgical larynges obtained after laryngectomy. Samples were taken from supraglottis, glottis and subglottic areas and immunohistochemistry for the beta subunit of the proton pump was done. Results The presence of proton pump was proved in seromucous glands in laryngeal supraglottic area, but it was also, for the first time, found in human chondrocytes in the thyroid and epiglottic cartilage. Conclusion These new findings could encourage further research that would illuminate better the etiopathogenesis not only of laryngopharyngeal reflux, but also the pathophysiology of cartilaginous disorders.
The aim of this study was to analyze the voice quality of alaryngeal tracheoesophageal and esophageal speech, and to determine which of them is more similar to laryngeal voice production, and thus ...more acceptable as a rehabilitation method of laryngectomized persons. Objective voice evaluation was performed on a sample of 20 totally laryngectomized subjects of both sexes, average age 61.3 years. Subjects were divided into two groups: 10 (50%) respondents with built tracheoesophageal prosthesis and 10 (50%) who acquired esophageal speech. Testing included 6 variables: 5 parameters of acoustic analysis of voice and one parameter of aerodynamic measurements. The obtained data was statistically analyzed by analysis of variance. Analysis of the data showed a statistically significant difference between the two groups in the terms of intensity, fundamental frequency and maximum phonation time of vowel at a significance level of 5% and confidence interval of 95%. A statistically significant difference was not found between the values of jitter, shimmer, and harmonic-to-noise ratio between tracheoesophageal and esophageal voice. There is no ideal method of rehabilitation and every one of them requires an individual approach to the patient, but the results shows the advantages of rehabilitation by means of installing voice prosthesis.
The aim of this retrospective study was to provide the incidence and mortality rate for all patients with laryngeal carcinoma diagnosed in Osijek-Baranja County, during the period of 1999-2008. In ...this period, there were 329 registered patients, from which 301 (91.5%) males, and 28 (8.5%) females. Age-standardized rate (ASR World) laryngeal cancer incidence was 6.4/100,000 (13.4/100,000 for males and 0.9/100,000 for females). In the same period, 238 people, including 224 (94.1%) men and 14 (5.9%) women died of laryngeal carcinoma. Age-standardized rate (ASR World) laryngeal cancer mortality was 4.4/100,000 (9.8/100,000 for males and 0.5/100 000 for females). There is a significant decline in mortality in males and increased mortality in females. Laryngeal carcinoma is a significant public health problem in the Osijek-Baranja county. Although the study period shows a tendency to decrease in the number of new cases and deaths, in the times ahead it is important to focus the emphasis on prevention and early detection with the goal of reducing incidence and mortality.

The molecular effects of exposures to engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) are still largely unknown. In classical inhalation toxicology, cell composition of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) is a toxicity ...indicator at the lung tissue level that can aid in interpreting pulmonary histological changes. Toxicogenomic approaches help characterize the mechanism of action (MOA) of ENMs by investigating the differentially expressed genes (DEG). However, dissecting which molecular mechanisms and events are directly induced by the exposure is not straightforward. It is now generally accepted that direct effects follow a monotonic dose-dependent pattern. Here, we applied an integrated modeling approach to study the MOA of four ENMs by retrieving the DEGs that also show a dynamic dose-dependent profile (dddtMOA). We further combined the information of the dddtMOA with the dose dependency of four immune cell populations derived from BAL counts. The dddtMOA analysis highlighted the specific adaptation pattern to each ENM. Furthermore, it revealed the distinct effect of the ENM physicochemical properties on the induced immune response. Finally, we report three genes dose-dependent in all the exposures and correlated with immune deregulation in the lung. The characterization of dddtMOA for ENM exposures, both for apical endpoints and molecular responses, can further promote toxicogenomic approaches in a regulatory context.

The COMPASS-U tokamak (R = 0.894 m, a = 0.27 m, Bt = 5 T, Ip = 2 MA) is a new medium-size device with fully metallic plasma facing components, currently under construction at the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague. It features a unique combination of parameters, such as a high temperature of the tokamak walls up to 500 °C allowing a high recycling regime, a high magnetic field connected with a high plasma density above 1020m−3 and with a high heat flux (perpendicular to divertor targets) density at the outer strike-point up to 90 MW/m2 in attached conditions. These parameters of the device pose strict constraints and requirements on the design of individual diagnostic systems. Strategy and present status of the development of the diagnostic systems for COMPASS-U are provided. Plans for a diagnostic set for the first plasma are reviewed. The review of the diagnostics systems involves the high-temperature compatible slow (up to 20 kHz) and fast (up to several MHz) inductive and non-inductive magnetic sensors (including Thick Printed Copper coils and Hall sensors), the sub-millimetre interferometer with an unambiguous channel, Electron Cyclotron Emission, the interlock and overview cameras, high resolution Thomson scattering, radiation diagnostics (neutron diagnostics, soft and hard X-ray diagnostics, bolometers, impurity monitors, effective ion charge), probe diagnostics (including rail probes) and manipulators.
