Charm production in charged current deep inelastic scattering has been measured for the first time in
e
±
p
collisions, using data collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA, corresponding to ...an integrated luminosity of 358 pb

. Results are presented separately for
e
+
p
and
e
−
p
scattering at a centre-of-mass energy of
s
= 318 GeV within a kinematic phase-space region of 200 GeV
2
<
Q
2
< 60000 GeV
2
and
y
< 0.9, where
Q
2
is the squared four-momentum transfer and
y
is the inelasticity. The measured cross sections of electroweak charm production are consistent with expectations from the Standard Model within the large statistical uncertainties.
Inclusive-jet cross sections have been measured in the reaction ep→e+jet+X for photon virtuality Q2<1 GeV2 and γp centre-of-mass energies in the region 142<Wγp<293 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA ...using an integrated luminosity of 300 pb−1. Jets were identified using the kT, anti-kT or SIScone jet algorithms in the laboratory frame. Single-differential cross sections are presented as functions of the jet transverse energy, ETjet, and pseudorapidity, ηjet, for jets with ETjet>17 GeV and −1<ηjet<2.5. In addition, measurements of double-differential inclusive-jet cross sections are presented as functions of ETjet in different regions of ηjet. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations give a good description of the measurements, except for jets with low ETjet and high ηjet. The influence of non-perturbative effects not related to hadronisation was studied. Measurements of the ratios of cross sections using different jet algorithms are also presented; the measured ratios are well described by calculations including up to O(αs2) terms. Values of αs(MZ) were extracted from the measurements and the energy-scale dependence of the coupling was determined. The value of αs(MZ) extracted from the measurements based on the kT jet algorithm is αs(MZ)=0.1206−0.0022+0.0023(exp.)−0.0035+0.0042(th.); the results from the anti-kT and SIScone algorithms are compatible with this value and have a similar precision.
The Pi of the Sky project observes optical flashes of astronomical origin and other light sources variable on short timescales, down to tens of seconds. We search mainly for optical emissions of ...Gamma Ray Bursts, but also for variable stars, blazars, etc. Precise photometry with a very large field of view (20?×20?) requires a careful study and modelling of a point spread function (PSF), as presented in this paper.
The photoproduction of isolated photons, both inclusive and together with a jet, has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 374 pb−1. Differential cross ...sections are presented in the isolated-photon transverse-energy and pseudorapidity ranges 6<ETγ<15 GeV and −0.7<ηγ<0.9, and for jet transverse-energy and pseudorapidity ranges 4<ETjet<35 GeV and −1.5<ηjet<1.8, for exchanged-photon virtualities Q2<1 GeV2. Differential cross sections are also presented for inclusive isolated-photon production as functions of the transverse energy and pseudorapidity of the photon. Higher-order theoretical calculations are compared to the results.
The reduced cross sections for e super(+)p deep inelastic scattering have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA at three different center-of-mass energies, 318, 251 and 225 GeV. The cross ...sections, measured double differentially in Bjorken x and the virtuality, Q super(2), were obtained in the region 0.13 < or = y < or = 0.75, where y denotes the inelasticity and 5 < or = Q super(2) < or = 110 GeV super(2). The proton structure functions F sub(2) and F sub(L) were extracted from the measured cross sections.

A database containing star measurements from the period 2006–2009 taken by the Pi of the Sky detector located in Las Campanas Observatory in Chile contains more than 2 billion measurements of almost ...17 million objects. All measurements are available on the Pi of the Sky web site through a dedicated interface, which also allows users to download selected data. Accurate analysis of Pi of the Sky data is a real challenge, because of a number of factors that can influence the measurements. Possible sources of errors in our measurements include: reading the chip with the shutter open, strong and varying sky background, passing planets or planetoids, and clouds and hot pixels. In order tofacilitate the analysis of variable stars we have developed a system of dedicated filters to remove bad measurements or frames. The spectral sensitivity of the detector is taken into account by appropriate corrections based on the spectral type of reference stars. This process is illustrated by an analysis of the BG Ind system, where we have been able to reduce the systematic uncertainty to about 0.05 magnitudo.
Space-based photometric measurements first revealed low-amplitude irregularities in the pulsations of Cepheid stars, but their origins and how commonly they occur remain uncertain. To investigate ...this phenomenon, we present MOST space telescope photometry of two Cepheids. V473 Lyrae is a second-overtone, strongly modulated Cepheid, while U Trianguli Australis is a Cepheid pulsating simultaneously in the fundamental mode and first overtone. The nearly continuous, high-precision photometry reveals alternations in the amplitudes of cycles in V473 Lyr, the first case of period doubling detected in a classical Cepheid. In U TrA, we tentatively identify one peak as the \(f_X\) or 0.61-type mode often seen in conjunction with the first radial overtone in Cepheids, but given the short length of the data, we cannot rule out that it is a combination peak instead. Ground-based photometry and spectroscopy were obtained to follow two modulation cycles in V473 Lyr and to better specify its physical parameters. The simultaneous data yield the phase lag parameter (the phase difference between maxima in luminosity and radial velocity) of a second-overtone Cepheid for the first time. We find no evidence for a period change in U TrA or an energy exchange between the fundamental mode and the first overtone during the last 50 years, contrary to earlier indications. Period doubling in V473 Lyr provides a strong argument that mode interactions do occur in some Cepheids and we may hypothesise that it could be behind the amplitude modulation, as recently proposed for Blazhko RR Lyrae stars.
Isolated photon production in deep inelastic ep scattering has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 320 pb−1. Measurements were made in the isolated-photon ...transverse-energy and pseudorapidity ranges 4<ETγ<15 GeV and −0.7<ηγ<0.9 for exchanged photon virtualities, Q2, in the range 10<Q2<350 GeV2 and for invariant masses of the hadronic system WX>5 GeV. Differential cross sections are presented for inclusive isolated photon production as functions of Q2, x, ETγ and ηγ. Leading-logarithm parton-shower Monte Carlo simulations and perturbative QCD predictions give a reasonable description of the data over most of the kinematic range.
