Spermidine is a naturally occurring polyamine compound that has recently emerged with anti-aging properties and suppresses inflammation and oxidation. However, its mechanisms of action on ...anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects have not been fully elucidated. In this study, the potential of spermidine for reducing pro-inflammatory and oxidative effects in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophages and zebrafish was explored. Our data indicate that spermidine significantly inhibited the production of pro-inflammatory mediators such as nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E
(PGE
), and cytokines including tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β in RAW 264.7 macrophages without any significant cytotoxicity. The protective effects of spermidine accompanied by a marked suppression in their regulatory gene expression at the transcription levels. Spermidine also attenuated the nuclear translocation of NF-κB p65 subunit and reduced LPS-induced intracellular accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in RAW 264.7 macrophages. Moreover, spermidine prevented the LPS-induced NO production and ROS accumulation in zebrafish larvae and was found to be associated with a diminished recruitment of neutrophils and macrophages. Although more work is needed to fully understand the critical role of spermidine on the inhibition of inflammation-associated migration of immune cells, our findings clearly demonstrate that spermidine may be a potential therapeutic intervention for the treatment of inflammatory and oxidative disorders.
The magnetic properties of heat treated O-series high temperature superconducting (HTS) GdBCO coated conductor (CC) tapes which were formed of Ag/GdBCO/Buffer-layers/Stainless Steel (SS), were ...investigated by employing a Quantum Design PPMS-14. Using a modified Bean model, the critical current density Jc values have been estimated from the mirr(H) data, which are obtained by measuring the magnetic moment m(H) loops. For a range of intermediate fields, which are interacting or collective flux pinning area, the magnetic flux behaviors were investigated from the relationship Jc H-. In addition, the changes of irreversibility magnetic field Hirr line of heat-treated O-series HTS GdBCO CC tapes were analyzed, according as the annealing temperature under oxygen flowing increases. Both weak and strong break-downs were found by examining the changes of irreversibility magnetic field Hirr lines.

Species composition, community structure and biodiversity of marine benthic community were studied in the intertidal zone of Seoam, Busan. A total of 75 species of benthic marine plants including 4 ...Cyanophyta, 6 Chlorophyta, 17 Phaeophyta, 47 Rhodophyta and 1 Magnoliophyta are listed. The dominant marine plants were melobesioidean algae, Chondracanthus tenellus, Sargasium thunbergii, Corallina spp., and Phyllospadix japonica and Ulva pertusa was added in summer. Chthamalus challengeri and Mytilus edulis were dominant zoobenthic species in the upper and middle intertidal zone. The algal species diversity index based on coverage was 1.81; 2.25 from frequency; 2.19 from average of total frequency and coverage, and 1.80 from importance value. The algal diversity indices estimated from different sources were quite different. This means that the index value changes depending on the sources used to calculate the species diversity index, indicating how important it is to select the based data and that it is necessary to standardize the methodology when studying later the algal diversity index. On the other hand, the number of species identified in this study has been found to be reduced by 65% at highest, compared with the result of the investigation that was conducted in the coast of Busan. 부산 서암 조간대 부착생물군집의 종조성, 군집구조, 종다양성을 조사하였다. 부착해산식물의 출현종수는 남조류 4종, 녹조류 6종, 갈조류 17종, 홍조류 47종, 해산종자식물 l종으로 총 75종이 관찰되었다. 부착해산식물 우점종은 melobesioidean algae, Chondracanthus tenellus, Sargassium thunbergii, Corallina spp., Phyllospadix japonica 5 종이었고, 여름에 Ulva pertusa가 추가되는 경향을 보였다. 저서동물은 Chthamalus challengeri and Mytilus edulis 가 조간대 상부와 중부에 우점하는 단순한 분포를 보였다. 한편 해조군집의 종다양성지수는 빈도, 피도, 빈도와 피도 합 그리고 중요도를 기준으로 계산한 결과, 각각 1.81, 2.25, 2.19, 1.80로 나타났다. 이는 종다양성지수의 계산을 위한 기준자료에 따라 값이 달라짐을 의미하는 것으로, 차후 종다양서지수를 논할 때 기본자료 선택의 중요성과 방법론의 표준화가 필요함을 지적한 것이다. 한편 본 연구에서 분류된 해조류 종수는 부산연안에서 기 조사된 결과와 비교할 때 최고 65%까지 감소한 것으로 나타났다.
This study was conducted at Seomjin River estuary to identify the causative species of algal bloom and their blooming cycles. Field surveys were conducted at 4 stations in every week from April to ...December of 1999. Thirty species were observed as the causative species of alga bloom. Skeletonema costatum, Thalassiosira sp., and microflagellate spp. (mixed red tide: Chroomonas sp. and two species of Prasinophycea) made algal blooms during the present study period. In addition, toxic algal species of diatom Pseudo-nitzschia multiseries and dinoflagellate Dinophysis acuminata were observed. The algal blooms were caused by microflagellate spp. in June, Thalassiosira sp. in July and Skeletonema costatum in August. Generally, the algal blooms persisted for about 5 days in this area.

Algal flora and community structure of benthic marine algae in the subtidal zone, Yeongil Bay area were studied. The number of algal species in the quadrats were identified totally 78: 2 Cyanophyta, ...10 Chlorophyta, 19 Phaeophyta, and 47 Rhodophyta. The dominant species based on biomass were Sargassum hornerii, Undaria pinnatifida, and Sargassum thunbergii. Vertical distribution was clear by the representative algae such as, Undaria pinnatifida, Sargassum thunbergii, Sargassum horneri, Corallina spp. in the upper subtidal zone, Undaria pinnatifida, Sargassum horneri, Caulerpa okamurae in the middle zone, and Dictyopteris divaricata in the lower zone.
The Prorocentrum species, which are primarily marine, are distributed worldwide and occur in ocean, neritic, and littoral environments. Prorocentrum is either a planktonic or benthic genus, with some ...species possibly being both. Until now, about 35 species had been reported including two that are fresh-water. Some species contain toxic substances. As one of many currently active studies, we collected P. vietnamensis sp. nov. from Hon M? Gulf of Tongkin, Vietnam. Based on its cell shape, smooth valve surface, arrangement of valves and marginal pores, plus characteristics of the central pyrenoid, we propose that P. vietnamensis is a new species. Its attributes include straight cell sides that are parallel to each other, as well as anterior and posterior areas with rounded ends that form a short, rod-shaped cell that is unique to this species. The community structure of benthic marine algae was investigated at Taean Thermal Power Plant and other places around Taean Peninsula, the west coast of Korea. Total of 100 species including 3 ...Cyanophyta, 14 Chlorophyta, 18 Phaeophyta, and 65 Rhodophyta were identified. The number of species was highest with 78 species at the Power Plant intake, followed by 61 at the discharge, 56 at Bunjeondo, and 50 at Maoe. It was noteworthy that a subtropical species Caulerpa okamurae was collected at the intake in autumn and it was the first observation in the west coast of Korea. The pattern of vertical algal distribution showed Gloiopeltis furcata occurred in the upper intertidal zone, Sargassum thunbergii and Corallina spp. in the middle and lower zone and Enteromorpha spp. in the lower middle zone. These were all dominant species except for Enteromopha spp., which was subdominant species. Other subdominant species were Chondrus ocellatus and Neorhodomela aculeata. The average diversity indices were between 0.70 and 1.20 at each area based on their dry weight. The similarity index was 0.79 between the algal flora of this study and that of 1987, indicating that the condition of the benthic environment remained unchanged since then. This area maintained its environmental quality, so the algal community remained same with similar structure. This study area seemed a suitable place for long term monitoring of the benthic environment where industrial facilities such as a power plant might affect the benthic algal community.
