Abstract Ghaf, a resilient tree in arid environments, plays a critical role in ecological restoration, desertification mitigation, and cultural heritage preservation. However, the seeds’ inherent ...challenges, notably their hard outer coating restricting germination, emphasize the pressing need for innovative strategies. This work aimed to investigate the optimization of Ghaf seed germination process through seed priming with ZnO nanoparticles treatment (duration (t), concentration (c), temperature (T), and agitation (a), employing the Taguchi method for efficient experimental design. Furthermore, the study includes Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), analysis for the regression model to assess the significance of predictor variables and their interactions, thereby strengthening the statistical validity of our optimization approach. Notably, it revealed that concentration is a pivotal influencer in optimization of Ghaf seed germination. The results showed that the concentration of ZnO nanoparticles has no linear relation with any other parameters. To verify the outcomes, validation tests were performed utilizing the predicted optimal parameters. The observed low error ratio, falling within the range of 1 to 6%, confirmed the success of the Taguchi methodology in identifying optimal levels of the factors chosen. Significantly, ZnO-primed seeds showcased a remarkable enhancement in Ghaf seed germination, increasing from 15 to 88%. This study introduces a novel approach utilizing ZnO nanoparticle treatment optimized through the Taguchi method, significantly enhancing seed germination rates of Ghaf seeds and offering a promising avenue for sustainable agricultural practices in arid environments.
The effectiveness of the inactivated BBIBP-CorV vaccine against severe COVID-19 outcomes (hospitalization, critical care admission and death due to COVID-19) and its long-term effectiveness have not ...been well characterized among the general population. We conducted a retrospective cohort study using electronic health records of 3,147,869 adults, of which 1,099,886 vaccinated individuals were matched, in a 1:1 ratio to 1,099,886 unvaccinated persons. A Cox-proportional hazard model with time varying coefficients was used to assess the vaccine effectiveness adjusting for age, sex, comorbidity, ethnicity, and the calendar month of entry into the study. Our analysis showed that the effectiveness was 79.6% (95% CI, 77.7 to 81.3) against hospitalization, 86% (95% CI, 82.2 to 89.0) against critical care admission, and 84.1% (95% CI, 70.8 to 91.3) against death due to COVID-19. The effectiveness against these severe outcomes declined over time indicating the need for booster doses to increase protection against severe COVID-19 outcomes.

Alfuzosin hydrochloride (AZH) is co-formulated with solifenacin succinate (SOS) in Solitral® capsules for treating prostate hyperplasia in patients with overactive bladder syndrome. Herein and for the first time, an ultrasensitive synchronous spectrofluorimetric approach coupled with first-order derivative signal processing was designed for simultaneous determination of AZH and SOS in their pure forms, newly-released pharmaceutical capsules, and human biological fluids. AZH and SOS showed their conventional emission spectra in bi-distilled water at 382 nm and 294 nm after excitation at 325 nm and 250 nm, respectively. The native fluorescence intensities of AZH and SOS were greatly enhanced through micellar formation using sodium dodecyl sulfate surfactant (2%). The proposed approach included the use of synchronous mode at Δλ of 60 nm where the overlap between the studied analytes’ fluorescence spectra wasn't completely resolved. The complete resolution was achieved by derivatization of the synchronized spectra to the first-order yielding two zero-crossing points which allowed the determination of AZH and SOS simultaneously without interference at 408 nm and 321 nm, respectively. Under optimum experimental circumstances, good linearities were accomplished over the concentration ranges of (1–24) ng/mL and (4–250) ng/mL with LOD of 0.26 ng/mL and 1.31 ng/mL for AZH and SOS, respectively. The proposed approach was validated successfully according to guidelines adopted by the ICH and compared statistically with the reported LC method with no discernible differences concerning accuracy or precision at p = 0.05. Successful application of the proposed approach achieved with excellent recovery percentages for analysis of the studied analytes in different matrices (pharmaceutical capsules and biological fluids) confirms its suitability for use in QC laboratories and other bioanalytical applications. The proposed approach’s greenness was evaluated using two tools namely; penalty points scoring system and green analytical procedure index (GAPI) divulging excellent greenness of this approach relative to the reported LC method. The proposed approach relied chiefly on water as the cheapest and greenest solvent.

Pain assessed by visual analogue scale (VAS) during OH, immediately and 30 minutes after the procedure.
One hundred thirteen studies were identified of which four randomized clinical trials were deemed eligible for this review (tramadol: n = 209; placebo: n = 209). The pooled estimate showed that tramadol significantly reduced VAS during procedure than placebo (weighted mean difference WMD = −1.33; 95% confidence interval CI −1.78 to −0.88, I2 = 3%, P = .36). In addition, tramadol significantly reduced VAS immediately after the procedure (WMD = −1.05; 95% CI −1.49 to −0.61, I2= 0, P = .84) and 30 minutes after (WMD = −0.98; 95% CI −1.30 to −0.65, I2 = 0, P = .88).
This meta-analysis suggests that tramadol is safe, effective, and gives favorable results in reducing pain during diagnostic OH.

Salivary markers could serve as potential noninvasive markers in the diagnosis of neonatal infections. We aimed to investigate the diagnostic role of salivary and serum interleukin 10 (IL-10), ...C-reactive protein (CRP), mean platelet volume (MPV), and CRP/MPV ratio in the diagnosis of late-onset neonatal sepsis in full-term neonates. Seventy full-term neonates were enrolled in this prospective case-control study, 35 with late-onset neonatal sepsis, and 35 controls. Salivary IL-10, serum IL-10, and CRP concentrations were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Complete blood (CBC) count was measured by an automated blood cell counter. The salivary IL-10, serum IL-10, CRP, MPV, and CRP/MPV ratio levels were much higher in neonates with late-onset sepsis than in control (220±150 vs. 18±9 pg/ml, P<0.001), (316±198 vs. 23.7±14 pg/ml, P<0.001), (78.2±34 vs. 3.3±1.7 mg/L, P<0.001), (11.2±0.9 vs. 8.6±0.4 fL), and (7.08±3.3 vs. 0.4±0.2, P<0.001), respectively. At the cutoff point of >31 pg/ml, salivary IL-10 showed 97.1% sensitivity and 94.3% specificity. Serum IL-10 at a cutoff value of ≥33.6 pg/ml had a sensitivity of 97.1% and specificity of 80%. MPV showed a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 94.4% at a cutoff value≥9.2 fL. CRP/MPV ratio showed a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 97.1% at a cutoff value>0.9. Salivary and serum IL-10 showed a positive correlation with CRP and CRP/MPV ratio in septic neonates. The current study shows for the first time that both salivary IL-10 and CRP/MPV showed statistically significant differences between neonates with late-onset sepsis and controls. Accordingly, salivary IL-10 could serve as a potential noninvasive biomarker for the diagnosis of late-onset sepsis in full-term neonates.
Abstract Background This study’s purposes were to evaluate the impact of biological therapies on outcomes in patients with severe asthma (SA) and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and to compare these ...effects among those with NP (CRSwNP) versus those without NP (CRSsNP) in the “real-world” setting in Saudi Arabian patients. Methods From March to September 2022, a retrospective observational cohort study was undertaken at the severe asthma clinics of the Armed Forces Hospital—Southern Region (AFHSR) and King Khalid University Hospital, Abha, Saudi Arabia, to delineate the effects of dupilumab therapy. Outcomes were assessed, including clinical outcomes, FEV1, and laboratory findings before and one year after dupilumab. Post-therapy effects were compared between CRSwNP and CRSsNP. Results Fifty subjects were enrolled, with a mean age of 46.56. There were 27 (54%) females and 23(46%) males. Significant improvements in clinical parameters (frequency of asthma exacerbations and hospitalizations, the use of OCs, anosmia, SNOTT-22, and the ACT), FEV1, and laboratory ones (serum IgE and eosinophilic count) were observed 6 and 12 months after using dupilumab ( p < 0.001), respectively. However, after 12 months of dupilumab therapy, there were no significant differences between those with and without NP with regards to clinical (anosmia, ACT, and OCs use), laboratory (eosinophilic count, serum IgE level) parameters, and FEV1%. Conclusions Patients with CRS experienced significant improvements in clinical, FEV1, and laboratory outcomes after dupilumab therapy. However, these improvements were not maintained when comparing CRSwNP with CRSsNP. There were no significant differences between those with and without NP regarding ACT and OCs use or laboratory (eosinophilic count, serum IgE level) parameters. Further prospective multicenter studies are warranted.
Neonatal pneumonia is a serious respiratory infectious disease with a high rate of case fatality in developing countries. Salivary cytokines could serve as interesting noninvasive markers in the ...diagnosis of neonatal pneumonia. The aim was to assess the diagnostic role of salivary and serum interleukin-6 (IL-6), C-reactive protein/mean platelet volume (CRP/MPV) ratio, and the combination of these markers in the diagnosis of late-onset neonatal pneumonia in full-term neonates. Seventy full-term neonates, 35 with late-onset neonatal pneumonia and 35 controls, were enrolled in this prospective case-control study. Complete blood count (CBC), salivary and serum IL-6, and CRP concentrations were measured for all the study subjects. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of salivary IL-6, serum IL-6, and CRP/MPV ratio for the diagnosis of late-onset neonatal pneumonia were determined. At the cutoff point of >34 pg/ml, salivary IL-6 showed 82.86% sensitivity and 91.43% specificity. CRP/MPV ratio showed a sensitivity of 97.14% and specificity of 85.71% at a cutoff value>0.88. The combination of salivary IL-6 and CRP/MPV ratio improved the sensitivity and specificity to 100%. The current study shows for the first time that both salivary IL-6 and CRP/MPV ratio are suitable markers for the diagnosis of late-onset neonatal pneumonia in full-term neonates.
Duck hepatitis virus (DHV) has always been considered one of the threats endangering duck farming in Egypt since the 1960s. In the current study, suspected DHV samples (

= 30) were obtained from ...commercial Pekin, Mulard (hybrid), and Muscovy duck farms and backyards in Beheira, Alexandria, Gharbia, Kafr El-Sheikh, and Giza provinces between 2012 and 2017. Diseased 3–21-day-old ducklings showed a clinical history of high mortality rates and nervous signs. Samples were screened by RT-PCR targeting the 5′UTR region and VP1 gene. via
allantoic route inoculation onto 9-day-old specific-pathogen-free embryonated chicken eggs. Embryos showed stunting, subcutaneous hemorrhages, and liver necrotic greenish-yellow foci. Duck hepatitis A virus-1 (DHAV-1) isolates were genetically analyzed in comparison to other field and vaccine strains. Phylogenetic analyses of the full-length VP1 gene sequences revealed that the obtained DHAV-1 field isolates clustered into genetic group 4 alongside other Egyptian strains isolated during the same period (95.9–99.72% similarity). Amino acid substitutions in the carboxyl-terminal of VP1 (I180T, G184E, D193N, and M213I) were identified in two strains. Also, deletion mutation at I189 was detected in three DHAV-1 strains. Additionally, the two amino acid residues E205 and N235 were common among the isolated strains and other virulent DHAV-1 strains. Two DHAV-1 isolates originated from Pekin source were selected for conducting the comparative pathogenicity testing based on detected point mutations at C-terminus of VP1. We evaluated the pathogenicity of these isolates by investigating clinical signs, mortality rates, and gross pathological and microscopic lesions. The study revealed that experimentally infected Pekin and Muscovy ducklings showed similar clinical signs including squatting down, lateral recumbency, and spasmodic kicking. Muscovy showed milder pathological changes in the liver compared to Pekin ducklings. Histopathological findings supported the gross pathological lesions detected in both breeds. In conclusion, these data provide updated information on the genetic diversity and pathotyping of Egyptian DHAV-1 strains. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of comparative pathogenicity of recent DHAV-1 strains in Pekin and Muscovy ducklings in Egypt and the Middle East region.
Early detection of suspicious pigmented skin lesions is crucial for improving the outcomes and survival rates of skin cancers. However, the accuracy of clinical diagnosis by primary care physicians ...(PCPs) is suboptimal, leading to unnecessary referrals and biopsies. In recent years, deep learning (DL) algorithms have shown promising results in the automated detection and classification of skin lesions. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of DL algorithms for the detection of suspicious pigmented skin lesions in primary care settings. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using electronic databases, including PubMed, Scopus, IEEE Xplore, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and Web of Science. Data from eligible studies were extracted, including study characteristics, sample size, algorithm type, sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), positive likelihood ratio (PLR), negative likelihood ratio (NLR), and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. Three studies were included. The results showed that DL algorithms had a high sensitivity (90%, 95% CI: 90-91%) and specificity (85%, 95% CI: 84-86%) for detecting suspicious pigmented skin lesions in primary care settings. Significant heterogeneity was observed in both sensitivity (p = 0.0062, I2 = 80.3%) and specificity (p < 0.001, I2 = 98.8%). The analysis of DOR and PLR further demonstrated the strong diagnostic performance of DL algorithms. The DOR was 26.39, indicating a strong overall diagnostic performance of DL algorithms. The PLR was 4.30, highlighting the ability of these algorithms to influence diagnostic outcomes positively. The NLR was 0.16, indicating that a negative test result decreased the odds of misdiagnosis. The area under the curve of DL algorithms was 0.95, indicating excellent discriminative ability in distinguishing between benign and malignant pigmented skin lesions. DL algorithms have the potential to significantly improve the detection of suspicious pigmented skin lesions in primary care settings. Our analysis showed that DL exhibited promising performance in the early detection of suspicious pigmented skin lesions. However, further studies are needed.
