Isotropic polyethersulfone (PES) membrane for separation of oil-in-water nanoemulsion was successfully developed using non-solvent vapor-induced phase separation (VIPS). The surface and structural properties of the fabricated PES membranes were thoroughly characterized using various techniques. The membrane separation performance was evaluated in terms of permeate flux, oil rejection, antifouling capability, and water flux recovery. Remarkably improved surface hydrophilicity for isotropic PES membrane (contact angle, CA = 39°) compared to anisotropic PES membrane (CA = 70°), resulting in superior pure water permeance, attaining 4721 L/h⋅m2⋅bar at operating pressure of 0.5 bar. The isotropic PES membrane achieved superior crude oil-in-water nanoemulsion separation (permeance of 713 L/h⋅m2⋅bar and 100% rejection) at oil concentration of 1 g/L. At extremely high oil concentration of 50 g/L, the PES membrane was not completely fouled and showed permeance of 65 L/h⋅m2⋅bar and 98.2% rejection. Moreover, the flux recovery of the fouled isotropic PES membrane exceeded 59.5% over three subsequent cycles of filtration and back-washing with water. Overall, this study might provide substantial guidance for large-scale manufacturing and application of isotropic PES membrane in treating practically challenging emulsified oil-in-water nanoemulsion under harsh conditions.
To ensure maximum comfort for the wearer, electronic components that include energy harvesters need to be mechanically conformable. In this context, we demonstrate a versatile, cost-effective and ...efficient method for fabricating graphene supercapacitor electrodes using Laser Induced Graphene (LIG). A CO 2 laser beam instantly transforms the irradiated polyethersulfone polymer (PES) into a highly porous carbon structure. The LIG method was used to deposit graphene layers on graphite sheets to produce the supercapacitor electrodes. Graphene formation and morphology were examined and confirmed using several techniques including Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, Raman Spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Moreover, the electrochemical characterization was performed in different electrolytes (NaOH and KOH). At 5 mV s −1 , the LIG electrode achieved 165 mF cm −2 and 250 mF cm −2 in NaOH and KOH electrolytes, respectively. Consequently, we show that a wearable symmetric supercapacitor device with LIG electrodes achieved 98.5 mF cm −2 at 5 mV s −1 in KOH electrolyte. The device demonstrated an energy density of <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">11.3~\mu </tex-math></inline-formula>Wh.cm −2 with power density of 0.33 mWcm −2 at 0.5 mA cm −2 . The retention of capacitance was 75% after 2000 cycles, with outstanding performance for the comparable graphene-based electrodes. These results further validate the use of LIG for developing flexible energy harvesters for wearable applications.

Developing polymeric membranes for oily wastewater treatment has attracted great interest over the last few years. However, the low permeance and poor fouling resistance are considered the most challenging issues. Introducing topographic patterns on the membrane surface to increase active area and surface roughness is one practical strategy for reducing membrane fouling. Here, isotropic polyethersulfone (PES) membranes with line patterns and continuous sponge-like porous structure were prepared using phase separation micro-molding processes. Various techniques were used to characterize the morphologies and physicochemical properties of the as-prepared membranes. The surface wettability of the membranes was evaluated by measuring contact angle of a water drop in air and of industrial crude oil under water. The as-prepared membranes separation and antifouling performance were assessed using water permeance, oil rejection, and flux recovery ratio after emulsion filtration. The results showed that the patterned PES membrane has superior hydrophilic and antifouling capabilities, with a lower static water contact angle (CA) of 32° as compared to a flat PES membrane (CA = 39°). Furthermore, the patterned membrane had pure water permeance (PWP) of 8036 ± 65 L·h−1·m−2·bar−1, which was ∼ 68 % greater than that of the flat PES membrane. This is mainly attributable to the discernible increase in the membrane pore size distribution and the enhancement in membrane surface hydrophilicity due to the increase in surface roughness as a result of micro-patterning. The patterned membranes showed superior separation efficiency (>99.0 %) and permeance (7031 ± 65 L·h−1·m−2·bar−1) for the oil-in-water emulsion of 0.1 g·L−1. At a higher concentration of crude oil-in-water emulsion (50 g·L−1), the patterned PES membranes achieved promising permeance of 90 L/h.m2.bar and 99.9 % rejection. Furthermore, the flux recovery ratio of the patterned membrane exceeded 91 % after three consecutive cycles of dead-end filtration and backwashing with water, demonstrating the benefit of using micro-patterned membranes for treating high concentration and industrial oil-in-water emulsions.
Unfortunately, papyrus has not been sufficiently studied regarding improvement of the mechanical or optical properties, which degrade under the impact of aging factors over time. The aims of this ...research were studying the effects of hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) loaded with 0.25% of ZnO nanoparticles (NP) at different concentrations (1% and 2%) on papyrus sheet properties before and after aging. Various analyses were used, such as visual assessment by a universal serial bus (USB) digital microscope, mechanical properties, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, color change, and pH measurement. A dramatic increase in mechanical properties was observed after treatment. Besides, FTIR illustrated increasing of CH2 and OH stretching, which contribute to increasing the cellulose crystallinity index. There was no significant change in pH values after treatment or ageing. Slight changes of optical characteristics were observed for treated samples, after the artificial aging of the treated samples, the mechanical measurements showed that the values of tensile strength and elongation were close to the values of the standard sample, which may contribute to preventive protection of ZnO NP for treated samples from the artificial ageing.

It is crucial to understand how targeted traits in a hybrid breeding program are influenced by gene activity and combining ability. During the three growing seasons of 2015, 2016, and 2017, a field ...study was conducted with twelve cotton genotypes, comprised of four testers and eight lines. Thirty-two F1 crosses were produced in the 2015 breeding season using the line x tester mating design. The twelve genotypes and their thirty-two F1 crosses were then evaluated in 2016 and 2017. The results demonstrated highly significant differences among cotton genotypes for all the studied traits, showing a wide range of genetic diversity in the parent genotypes. Additionally, the line-x-tester interaction was highly significant for all traits, suggesting the impact of both additive and non-additive variations in gene expression. Furthermore, the thirty-two cotton crosses showed high seed cotton output, lint cotton yield, and fiber quality, such as fiber length values exceeding 31 mm and a fiber strength above 10 g/tex. Accordingly, selecting lines and testers with high GCA effects and crosses with high SCA effects would be an effective approach to improve the desired traits in cotton and develop new varieties with excellent yield and fiber quality.

We analyze the dynamics of squeezing in a ballistic quantum wire with Rashba spin-orbit interaction in the presence of both strong and weak magnetic fields and for different initial states of the ...system. Compared to the more standard measure of squeezing based on variances, we show that entropy squeezing is a more sensitive measure. Our results show that there is a strong relationship between the spin-orbit interaction and the strength of entropy squeezing. Furthermore, there is a relationship between the initial state and the number of squeezed components. This allows new knobs to control the strength and the component of entropy squeezing in a nanowire system.
To generate high-yielding cultivars with favorable fiber quality traits, cotton breeders can use information about combining ability and gene activity within a population to locate elite parents and ...potential F1 crosses. To this end, in the current study, twelve cotton parents (eight genotypes as female parents and four testers) and their F1 crosses obtained utilizing the linex tester mating design were evaluated for their general and specialized combining abilities (GCA and SCA, respectively) of yield traits. The findings showed that for all the investigated variables, variances owing to genotypes, parents, crosses, and parent vs cross showed extremely significant (P less than or equai to 0.01) differences. Additionally, throughout the course of two growing seasons, the mean squares for genotypes (parents and crosses) showed strong significance for all the variables under study. The greatest and most desired means for all the examined qualities were in the parent G.94, Pima S6, and tester G.86. The best crossings for the qualities examined were G.86 (G.89 x G.86), G.93 x Suvin, and G.86 x Suvin. The parents' Suvin, G89x G86 and TNB were shown to have the most desired general combining ability effects for seed cotton yield/plant, lint yield/plant, boll weight, number of bolls/plants, and lint index, while Suvin, G.96 and pima S6 were preferred for favored lint percentage. For seed cotton yield, lint percentage, boll weight, and number of bolls per plant per year, the cross-G.86 x (G.89 x G.86) displayed highly significant specific combining ability impacts. The crosses G.86 x Suvin, Kar x TNB, G.93 x Suvin, and G.93 x TNB for all the studied traits for each year and their combined were found to have highly significant positive heterotic effects relative to better parent, and they could be used in future cotton breeding programs for improving the studied traits.

In the present study, two different modified starches; microporous starch (MPS) and cationic microporous starch (CMPS) were synthesized. The granules of MPS that distributed regularly were destroyed ...after the etherification reaction. The data depicted that the immobilization of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) on CMPS revealed highest immobilization efficiency (86%) at 100 mg of CMPS at pH = 6.0 and 100 units of enzyme. After 10 reuses of the CMPS-HRP, it retained 66% of initial activity. The soluble HRP showed broad pH optimum of 6.0–7.0, which changed to sharp pH = 6.0 for CMPS-HRP. Soluble-HRP and CMPS-HRP showed temperature optima at 30 °C and 40 °C, respectively. The CMPS-HRP showed high thermal stability up to 50 °C compared to the soluble HRP (40 °C). The Km values of soluble HRP and CMPS-HRP were 6.6 and 10.8 mM for H2O2 and 34 and 41.6 mM for guaiacol, respectively. CMPS-HRP showed higher affinity toward various substrates than the soluble-HRP. CMPS-HRP showed more resistance against heavy metals, urea, isopropanol, Triton X-100 and trypsin than soluble enzyme. The CMPS-HRP showed higher ability to remove phenol and p-chlorophenol compared to soluble-HRP.
