Heat shock protein A5 (HSPA5), termed also GRP78, is a host cell chaperone protein responsible for the unfolded protein response in the endoplasmic reticulum. Under stress, HSPA5 is upregulated and becomes cell-surface exposed. Recent studies report the association of cell-surface HSPA5 with EBOV glycoproteins GP1 and GP2. In this study, structural and sequence analysis and molecular docking are used to predict the possible binding site between the cell-surface HSPA5 and EBOV GP1. The results show a promising binding site that supports the hypothesis of HSPA5 selectivity for binding to a specific peptide sequence (pep42). This study paves the way to suggest possible inhibitors to stop viral association with cell-surface receptors and subsequently reduce viral infection.
This study investigated the effects of fermentation and germination on the physicochemical, nutritional, functional, and bioactive quality attributes of samh seeds. Regardless of the processing ...treatment, samh seeds were found to be a rich source of phenolic compounds, namely gallic acid (79.6–96.36 mg/100 g DW), catechol (56.34–77.34 mg/100 g DW), and catechin (49.15–84.93 mg/100 g DW), and they possessed high DPPH antiradical activity (65.27–78.39%). They also contained high protein content (19.29–20.41%), essential amino acids content (39.07–44.16% of total amino acids), and unsaturated fatty acid content (81.95–83.46% of total fatty acids) and a low glycemic index (39.61–41.43). Fermentation and germination increased L*, b*, foaming capacity, oil absorption capacity (OAC), water absorption capacity (WAC), swelling power, microbial counts, antioxidant activity, total flavonoid content (TFC), total phenolic content (TPC), in vitro protein digestibility, protein efficiency ratio, and total essential amino acids and reduced water solubility, emulsion stability, tannin, and phytate contents compared to raw samh seeds (p < 0.05). The highest levels of pH, ash, carbohydrate, fiber, and glycemic index were observed in raw samh seeds, and both germination and fermentation processes reduced these attributes to various degrees (p < 0.05). Germination increased the redness (a*), moisture content, essential and non-essential amino acids, potassium, zinc, phosphorous, stearic acid, and oleic and unsaturated fatty acids and reduced total solids, fat content, iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, sodium, palmitic acid, and total saturated fatty acids of the samh seeds compared to the raw ones. Fermentation increased the total solid, acidity, fat, protein, calcium, magnesium, sodium, phosphorous, iron, zinc, palmitic acid, and total saturated fatty acids and reduced the a* value, moisture, non-essential amino acids, and total unsaturated fatty acids of the samh seeds compared to the raw ones. In conclusion, samh seeds are a rich source of nutrients that could generally be enhanced by germination and fermentation processes. The reported information facilitates strategies towards the application of these underutilized seeds in foods.
Replacement of conventional feedstuffs with cheap non-conventional ingredients may improve livestock performance and the quality of their products, particularly milk. The study considered the effects ...of Moringa oleifera (MO) foliage in replacement of berseem clover (BC) on feed utilisation and lactational performance in Nubian goats. A total of 16 lactating Nubian does, weighing 36.2±0.8 kg, were randomly assigned to four experimental treatments containing 0, 125, 250 and 375 g of MO per kg diet to replace 0 (M0), 25 (M25), 50 (M50) and 75% (M75) of BC (on dry matter (DM) basis) in a quadruplicated 4×4 Latin square design. The MO diets increased (P<0.01) feed intake and nutrient digestibility. Feeding MO diets improved (P<0.01) ruminal volatile fatty acids, acetate and propionate but reduced (P<0.01) valerate and iso-butyrate. Moringa diets increased (P<0.01) serum total protein, albumin and glucose but decreased (P<0.05) cholesterol and triglycerides. Milk yield and energy corrected milk, and milk total solids, fat and energy content were increased (P<0.01) in MO diets. Yields of milk components and energy were greater (P<0.05) for MO diets than for control diet. Milk total saturated fatty acids and athrogenicity index were lower (P<0.01), and unsaturated fatty acids, conjugated fatty acids and UFA/SFA ratio higher (P<0.05) for MO diets. It is concluded that feeding MO to replace 75% DM of BC improved feed utilisation, ruminal fermentation, and milk yield and quality in lactating Nubian goats.
Abstract Adolescence is characterized by marked changes in the body, psychology, and sexual behavior due to increasing production of hormones. In this review we aimed to assess the effect of age at ...the time of first sexual intercourse (sexarche) on the health of adolescent girls, and identify factors that might protect against early initiation of sexual relations in girls. The PubMed, Lilacs, and Google Scholar databases were searched for clinical trials, comparative studies, case-control studies, cross-sectional studies, cohort studies, multicenter studies, observational studies, meta-analyses, and systematic reviews published up to December 2014 on this theme. The search terms were: “sexual debut,” “coitarche,” “sexarche,” and “young people,” “adolescent,” “unplanned pregnancy,” “adolescent contraception,” and “STDs.” Data were extracted from 28 studies and 41 references were used to introduce the theme and to support the discussion. Sexarche has been occurring in increasingly younger girls. A young age at sexarche can lead to subsequent risky sexual behavior. Girls who have sexarche when they are 14 years old or younger are less likely to use contraception on this occasion, take more time before they start using contraception in subsequent sexual relations, are more likely to have several sex partners, have a higher risk for depression, have lower self-esteem and more episodes of repentance, and have a higher risk for a sexually transmitted disease and cervical cancer. Girls with low educational, socioeconomic, and cultural status, little parental monitoring, parental separation, and absence of religiosity tend to experience sexarche at a younger age. Adolescent girls who postpone sexarche until they are 16 years old are physically and psychologically healthier than those who have sexarche at a younger age. This suggests that providing adolescent girls with appropriate education about sexual relations might reduce the negative effect of sexual relations at a young age.
An essential prerequisite for the survival of an organism is the ability to detect and respond to aversive stimuli. Current belief is that noxious stimuli directly activate nociceptive sensory nerve ...endings in the skin. We discovered a specialized cutaneous glial cell type with extensive processes forming a mesh-like network in the subepidermal border of the skin that conveys noxious thermal and mechanical sensitivity. We demonstrate a direct excitatory functional connection to sensory neurons and provide evidence of a previously unknown organ that has an essential physiological role in sensing noxious stimuli. Thus, these glial cells, which are intimately associated with unmyelinated nociceptive nerves, are inherently mechanosensitive and transmit nociceptive information to the nerve.
The dielectric parameters and ac electrical conductivity of Mg0.8Zn0.2CrxFe2−xO4; (0≤x≤0.025) nanoferrites synthesized citrate–nitrate auto-combustion method were studied using the complex impedance ...technique in the frequency and temperature ranges 4Hz–5MHz and 303–873K respectively. Hopping of charge carriers plus interfacial polarization could interpret the behaviors of dielectric constant (ε′), dielectric loss tangent (tanδ) and ac electrical conductivity (σac) with frequency, temperatures and composition. The up-normal behavior observed in tanδ trend with temperatures confirms the presence of relaxation loss (dipoles losses). Correlated barrier hopping (CBH) of electron is the conduction mechanism of the investigated nanoferrites. Cole-Cole plots at different temperatures emphasize the main role of grain and grain boundaries in the properties of the investigated nanoferrites. Cr3+ substitution can control the dielectric parameters and ac electrical conductivity of Mg-Zn nanoferrites making it candidates for versatile applications.

Biomedical applications, such as artificial implants, are very significant for the disabled due to their usage in orthopedics. Nevertheless, available materials in such applications have insufficient ...mechanical and tribological properties. The current study investigated the mechanical and tribological properties of a biomedical metallic material, magnesium (Mg), after incorporating titanium dioxide nanofibers (TiO
) with different loading fractions. The TiO
nanofibers were synthesized using the electrospinning technique. The ball-milling technique was utilized to ensure the homogenous distribution of TiO
nanofibers inside the Mg matrix. Then, samples of the mixed powder with different loading fractions of TiO
nanofibers, 0, 1, 3, 5, and 10 wt.%, were fabricated using a high-frequency induction heat sintering technique. The physicomechanical and tribological properties of the produced Mg/TiO
nanocomposites were evaluated experimentally. Results showed an enhancement in mechanical properties and wear resistance accompanied by an increase in the weight fraction of TiO
nanofibers up to 5%. A finite element model was built to assess the load-carrying capacity of the Mg/TiO
composite to estimate different contact stresses during the frictional process. The finite element results showed an agreement with the experimental results.
Background
The modified Dunn procedure, which is an open subcapital realignment through a surgical dislocation approach, has gained popularity for the treatment of unstable slipped capital femoral ...epiphysis (SCFE). Intraoperative monitoring of the femoral head perfusion has been recommended as a method of predicting osteonecrosis; however, the accuracy of this assessment has not been well documented.
Questions/purposes
We asked (1) whether intraoperative assessment of femoral head perfusion would help identify hips at risk of developing osteonecrosis; (2) whether one of the four methods of assessment of femoral head perfusion is more accurate (highest area under the curve) at identifying hips at risk of osteonecrosis; and (3) whether specific clinical features would be associated with osteonecrosis occurrence after a modified Dunn procedure for unstable SCFE.
Methods
Between 2007 and 2014, we performed 29 modified Dunn procedures for unstable SCFE (16 boys, 11 girls; median age, 13 years; range, 8–17 years); two were lost to followup before 1 year. During this period, six patients with unstable SCFE were treated by other procedures. All patients undergoing modified Dunn underwent assessment of epiphyseal perfusion by the presence of active bleeding and/or by intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring. In the initial five patients perfusion was recorded once, either before dissection of the retinacular flap or after fixation by one of the two methods. In the remaining 22 patients (81%), perfusion was systematically assessed before dissection of the retinacular flap and after fixation by both methods. Minimum followup was 1 year (median, 2.5 years; range, 1–8 years) because osteonecrosis typically develops within the first year after surgery. Patients were assessed for osteonecrosis by the presence of femoral head collapse at radiographs obtained every 3 months during the first year after surgery. Seven (26%) of the 27 patients developed osteonecrosis. Measures of diagnostic accuracy including sensitivity, specificity, and the area under the receiver operating curve (AUC) were estimated. Multiple variable logistic regression analyses were used to test whether the test options were better than random chance (AUC > 0.50) at differentiating between patients who did versus did not develop osteonecrosis. Nonparametric methods were used to test for a difference in AUC across the four methods. A secondary analysis was performed to identify risk factors associated with osteonecrosis.
Results
After adjusting for body mass index, which was found to be a confounding variable, assessment of femoral head perfusion with ICP monitoring before retinaculum dissection (adjusted AUC: 0.79; 95% confidence interval CI, 0.58–0.99; p = 0.006), femoral head perfusion with ICP monitoring after definitive fixation (adjusted AUC: 0.82; 95% CI, 0.65–1.0; p < 0.001), bleeding before retinaculum dissection (adjusted AUC: 0.77; 95% CI, 0.58–0.96; p = 0.006), and bleeding after definitive fixation (adjusted AUC: 0.81; 95% CI, 0.63–0.99; p = 0.001) were found to be helpful at identifying osteonecrosis. We were not able to identify a specific test that had performed best because there was no difference (p = 0.8226) in AUC across the four methods. With the numbers available, we were unable to identify clinical factors predictive of osteonecrosis in our cohort.
Conclusions
Assessments of femoral head blood perfusion by ICP monitoring or by the presence of active bleeding in combination with the patient’s body mass index are effective at differentiating between patients who do versus do not develop osteonecrosis after a modified Dunn procedure for unstable SCFE. Additional research is needed to determine whether information gained from assessment of femoral head perfusion during surgery should be used to guide targeted treatment recommendations that may reduce the development of femoral head deformity secondary to osteonecrosis.

This study presents the covalency and Racah parameter (B) of Fe3+ in Mn–Zn–Cr nanoferrites, which prepared by citrate–nitrate combustion method. Racah parameter was determined from the spectral data. ...The bands in the range of interest in optical absorbance are wide and asymmetric; a deconvolution (deconvolution to their component bands) of the experimental spectra becomes compulsory. Further, these spectra were employed to obtain Racah parameter. Racah parameter was decreased, with further Fe addition, from 540 to 441 cm-1. Also, nephelauxetic ratio (β) was decreased from 0.532 to 0.435. This denotes that the bonds of Fe3+ and its surroundings become more covalent (the covalency is increased).
3D printing offers an attractive means of forming structured metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), as this technique imparts digital geometric tuning to fit any process column. However, 3D-printed MOF ...structures are usually formed by suspending presynthesized particles into an ink for further processing. This leads to poor rheological properties as MOFs do not bind with inert binders. Herein, we address this problem by coordinating the MOF secondarily by 3D printing its gelated precursors. Specifically, we produced a printable sol–gel containing ∼70 wt % of HKUST-1 precursors and optimized the in situ growth conditions by varying the desolvation temperature and activation solvent. Analysis of the so-called gel-print-grow monoliths’ properties as a function of the coordination variables revealed that desolvating at 120 °C produced fully formed MOF particles with comparable diffractive indices to the parent powder regardless of the activation solvent used. Assessment of the samples’ textural properties revealed that washing in acetone or methanol produced the highest surface areas, pore volumes, and CO2 adsorption capacities, however, washing with methanol produced binder swelling and collapse of the printed structure, thereby indicating that washing with acetone was more effective overall. This study represents a promising way of 3D printing MOFs and a breakthrough in additive manufacturing, since the simple, high-throughput, framework detailed hereinwhereby the synthesis temperature and washing solvent are varied to optimize MOF coordinationcould easily be applied to other crystallites. As such, it is anticipated that this new and exciting method will provide new paths to shape engineer MOFs for applications in energy-intensive fields and beyond.
