We have discovered room-temperature low-field colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) in an A-site ordered NdBaMn2O6 crystal. The resistance changes more than 2 orders of magnitude at a magnetic field lower ...than 2 T near 300 K. When the temperature and magnetic field sweep from an insulating (metallic) phase to a metallic (insulating) phase, the insulating (metallic) conduction changes to the metallic (insulating) conduction within 1 K and 0.5 T, respectively. The CMR is ascribed to the melting of the charge and orbital ordering. The entropy change which is estimated from the B−T phase diagram is smaller than what is expected for the charge and orbital ordering. The suppression of the entropy change is attributable to the loss of the short-range ferromagnetic fluctuation of Mn spin moments, which is an important key of the high temperature and low magnetic field CMR effect.
In magnetoelectric materials, where the time-reversal and space-inversion symmetries are simultaneously broken, optical properties can differ between the opposite propagation directions of light. We ...report on an experimental observation of nonreciprocal trajectory of a light ray in magnetoelectric material CuB_{2}O_{4}. The light is refracted in different ways between the opposite propagation directions of light. We find a nonreciprocal refraction at the interface between a matter with macroscopic toroidal moment and vacuum. The resultant nonreciprocal deflection of the light is 0.005 deg, which is quantitatively explained using Fermat's principle.
The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) are experimentally investigated in a variety of ferromagnetic metals including pure transition metals, oxides, and chalcogenides, ...whose resistivities range over 5 orders of magnitude. For these ferromagnets, the transverse conductivity sigma{xy} versus the longitudinal conductivity sigma{xx} shows a crossover behavior with three distinct regimes in accordance qualitatively with a recent unified theory of the intrinsic and extrinsic AHE. We also found that the transverse Peltier coefficient alpha{xy} for the ANE obeys the Mott rule. These results offer a coherent and semiquantitative understanding of the AHE and ANE to an issue of controversy for many decades.
Legumes and their interaction with rhizobia represent one of the most well-characterized symbioses that are widespread across both natural and agricultural environments. However, larger distribution ...patterns and host associations on isolated Pacific islands with many native and introduced hosts have not been well-documented. Here, we used molecular and culturing techniques to characterize rhizobia from soils and 24 native and introduced legume species on the island of O'ahu, Hawai'i. We chose two of these isolates to inoculate an endemic legume tree, Erythina sandwicensis to measure nodulation potentials and host benefits. We found that all rhizobia genera can be found in the soil, where only Cupriavidus was found at all sites, although at lower abundance relative to other more common genera such as Rhizobium (and close relatives), Bradyzhizobium, and Devosia. Bradyrhizobium was the most common nodulator of legumes, where the strain Bradyrhizobium sp. strain JA1 is a generalist capable of forming nodules on nine different host species, including two native species. In greenhouse nursery inoculations, the two different Bradyrhizobium strains successfully nodulate the endemic E. sandwicensis; both strains equally and significantly increased seedling biomass in nursery inoculations. Overall, this work provides a molecular-based framework in which to study potential native and introduced rhizobia on one of the most isolated archipelagos on the planet.

The relationship between magnetic order and ferroelectric properties has been investigated for MnWO4 with a long-wavelength magnetic structure. Spontaneous electric polarization is observed in an ...elliptical spiral spin phase. The magnetic-field dependence of electric polarization indicates that the noncollinear spin configuration plays a key role for the appearance of the ferroelectric phase. An electric polarization flop from the b direction to the a direction has been observed when a magnetic field above 10 T is applied along the b axis. This result demonstrates that an electric polarization flop can be induced by a magnetic field in a simple system without rare-earth 4f moments.
The magnetization process of the orthogonal-dimer antiferromagnet SrCu2(BO3)2 is investigated in high magnetic fields of up to 118 T. A 1/2 plateau is clearly observed in the field range 84 to 108 T ...in addition to 1/8, 1/4, and 1/3 plateaus at lower fields. Using a combination of state-of-the-art numerical simulations, the main features of the high-field magnetization, a 1/2 plateau of width 24 T, a 1/3 plateau of width 34 T, and no 2/5 plateau, are shown to agree quantitatively with the Shastry-Sutherland model if the ratio of inter- to intradimer exchange interactions J'/J=0.63. It is further predicted that the intermediate phase between the 1/3 and 1/2 plateaus is not uniform but consists of a 1/3 supersolid followed by a 2/5 supersolid and possibly a domain-wall phase, with a reentrance into the 1/3 supersolid above the 1/2 plateau.

We give ...a complete classification of irreducible admissible C-representations of G=\mathbf {G}(F), in terms of supercuspidal C-representations of the Levi subgroups of G, and parabolic induction. Thus we push to their natural conclusion the ideas of the third author, who treated the case \mathbf {G}=\mathrm {GL}_m, as further expanded by the first author, who treated split groups \mathbf {G}. As in the split case, we first get a classification in terms of supersingular representations of Levi subgroups, and as a consequence show that supersingularity is the same as supercuspidality.
Summary Objective To investigate the effect of the histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor, trichostatin A (TSA), on joint inflammation and cartilage degeneration in a collagen antibody-induced ...arthritis (CAIA) mouse model. Methods CAIA mice were given daily subcutaneous injections of various concentrations of TSA (0, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg/kg) and various parameters were monitored for 14 days. On Day 15, the hind paws were examined histologically. To investigate the effects of TSA on the expressions of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-3, MMP-13, tissue inhibitor of MMP-1 (TIMP-1), and acetyl-H4 by chondrocytes, another group of mice was sacrificed on Day 6. In vitro direct effect of TSA was examined by real-time PCR for mRNA of type II collagen, aggrecan, MMP-3, and MMP-13 in murine chondrogenic ATDC5 cells after pro-inflammatory cytokine stimulation. Results In the TSA-treated group, clinical arthritis was significantly ameliorated in a dose-dependent manner. The severity of synovial inflammation and the cartilage destruction score were significantly lower in the TSA 2.0 mg/kg group compared to the other TSA-treated groups. On immunohistochemistry, the number of MMP-3 and MMP-13-positive chondrocytes was significantly lower in the TSA 2.0 mg/kg group than in the control group. In contrast, the number of TIMP-1-positive cells and acetyl-histone H4-positive cells was significantly higher in the TSA 2.0 mg/kg group than in the control group. TSA suppressed interleukin 1-β and tumor necrosis factor-α-stimulated up-regulation of MMP-3, but not MMP-13 mRNA expression by ATDC5. Conclusion The systemic administration of TSA ameliorated synovial inflammation in CAIA mice. Subsequently cartilage destruction was also suppressed by TSA, at least in part, by modulating chondrocyte gene expression.

In a previous paper, Florian ...Herzig and the authors classified irreducible admissible C-representations of G=\mathbf G(F) in terms of supercuspidal representations of Levi subgroups of G. Here, for a parabolic subgroup P of G with Levi subgroup M and an irreducible admissible C-representation \tau of M, we determine the lattice of subrepresentations of \textup {Ind}_P^G \tau and we show that \textup {Ind}_P^G \chi \tau is irreducible for a general unramified character \chi of M. In the reverse direction, we compute the image by the two adjoints of \textup {Ind}_P^G of an irreducible admissible representation \pi of G. On the way, we prove that the right adjoint of \textup {Ind}_P^G respects admissibility, hence coincides with Emerton's ordinary part functor \textup {Ord}_{\overline P}^G on admissible representations.
