In sexual reproduction of most animals, the spermatozoon provides DNA and centrioles, together with some cytoplasm and organelles, to the oocyte that is being fertilized. Paternal mitochondria and ...their genomes are generally eliminated in the embryo by an unknown degradation mechanism. We show that, upon fertilization, a Caenorhabditis elegans spermatozoon triggers the recruitment of autophagosomes within minutes and subsequent paternal mitochondria degradation. Whereas the nematode-specific sperm membranous organelles are ubiquitinated before autophagosome formation, the mitochondria are not. The degradation of both paternal structures and mitochondrial DNA requires an LC3-dependent autophagy. Analysis of fertilized mouse embryos shows the localization of autophagy markers, which suggests that this autophagy event is evolutionarily conserved to prevent both the transmission of paternal mitochondrial DNA to the offspring and the establishment of heteroplasmy.

The performance of apparently biocompatible implanted bovine bone grafts may be compromised by unresolved chronic inflammation, and poor graft incorporation leading to implant failure. Monitoring the ...intensity and duration of the inflammatory response caused by implanted bone grafts is crucial. In this study, the ability of demineralized (DMB) and decellularized (DCC) bovine bone substitutes in initiating inflammatory responses to peripheral blood monocyte-derived macrophages (PBMMs) was investigated. The response of PBMMs to bone substitutes was evaluated by using both direct and indirect cell culture, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, apoptosis, immunophenotyping, and cytokine production. Analysis of DMB and DCC substitutes using scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed a roughened surface with a size ranging between 500 and 750 μm. PBMMs treated with DMB demonstrated cell aggregation and clumping mimicking lipopolysaccharide (LPS) treated PBMMs and a higher proliferation ability (166.93%) compared to control (100%) and DCC treatments (115.64%; p<0.001) at 24h. This was associated with a significantly increased production of intracellular ROS in PBMMs exposed to DMB substitutes than control (3158.5 vs 1715.5; p<0.001) and DCC treatment (2117.5). The bone substitute exposure also caused an increase in percentage apoptosis which was significantly (p<0.0001) higher in both DMB (27.85) and DCC (29.2) treatment than control (19.383). A significant increase in proinflammatory cytokine expression (TNF-α: 3.4 folds; p<0.05) was observed in DMB substitute-treated PBMMs compared to control. Notably, IL-1β mRNA was significantly higher in DMB (21.75 folds; p<0.0001) than control and DCC (5.01 folds). In contrast, DCC substitutes exhibited immunoregulatory effects on PBMMs, as indicated by the expression for CD86, CD206, and HLDR surface markers mimicking IL-4 treatments. In conclusion, DMB excites a higher immunological response compared to DCC suggesting decellularization process of tissues dampen down inflammatory reactions when exposed to PBMM.

Summary
It is not known which regional analgesic technique is most effective or safest after open lung resection. We retrospectively examined outcomes in 828 patients who received thoracic epidural ...analgesia and 791 patients who received paravertebral block after lung resection between 2008 and 2012. We analysed outcomes for 648 patients, 324 who had each analgesic technique, matched by propensity scores generated with peri‐operative data. There were 22 out of 324 (7%) postoperative respiratory complications after thoracic epidural and 23 out of 324 (7%) after paravertebral block, p = 0.88. For any postoperative complication, there were 80 out of 324 (25%) and 78 out of 324 (24%) complications, respectively, p = 0.85. There were 17 out of 324 (5%) re‐admissions to intensive care after thoracic epidural and 17 out of 324 (5%) after paravertebral block, p > 0.99, and the number of deaths before discharge were 6 out of 324 (2%) and 4 out of 324 (1%), respectively, p = 0.53. There was no significant difference in median (IQR range) hospital stay after thoracic epidural or paravertebral block, 6 (5–9 2–94) days vs. 6 (5–9 2–122), respectively, p = 0.83. Our study suggests that rates of complications as well as length of hospital stay after thoracic epidural analgesia and paravertebral blockade are similar. We were unable to compare analgesic efficacy due to incomplete data.
Background and Objective: The role of pharmacists in society is unique since they are providers of drug information and medication counseling to patients. Hence, the present study was designed to ...investigate the knowledge, of undergraduate pharmacy students regarding food drug (FDIs) and alcohol-drug interactions (ADIs) at King Saud University, Riyadh Saudi Arabia. Methodology: An online cross-sectional study was conducted among undergraduate pharmacy students at King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from October 2021 to January 2022, using self-administered 24-items questionnaires focused on evaluating the knowledge of FDIs and ADIs. Results: Of the 200 questionnaires distributed, 142 students responded, of whom 40.8% (n = 58) of the students did not agree with the statement that patients can eat more green leafy vegetables with warfarin. Just over half 52.8% (n = 75) agreed that milk affects the efficacy of tetracycline. Regarding the students' knowledge about amiodarone interactions with grapefruit 43% (n = 61) of them were knowledgeable, while 43.7% (n = 62), knew that atorvastatin cannot be taken with grapefruit. A total of 44.4% (n = 63) of the students reported being knowledgeable about FDIs. In terms of the individual questions, Alcohol interactions with antihistamines and paracetamol received the highest percentages of 52.8% (n = 75) and 50.7% (n = 72), respectively, followed by warfarin and methotrexate (45.1%; 41.5%). In this study, 39.4% (n = 56) of the participants were found knowledgeable about ADIs. The overall knowledge of interactions among the students was 47.9% (n = 68). The total knowledgeable levels were significantly associated with educational levels and having previous information about interaction (p = 0.0001). Conclusion: In conclusion, undergraduate pharmacy students exhibited poor knowledge of FDIs and ADIs. As a result, more focus and effort should be given to raising awareness of potential FDIs and ADIs. Our study highlights the need for improving pharmacy students' knowledge about FDIs and ADIs. Abstract
To study the response of yield and its components and grains quality of some maize genotypes to foliar spraying, two field experiments were carried out at the Experimental Station Farm, ...Faculty of Agriculture,, Egypt, during the 2017 and 2018 seasons. Each experiment was carried out in a strip-plot design with four replications. The vertical-plots were assigned with maize genotypes i.e. Three Way Cross 324, Single Cross 128, and Single Cross 131. The horizontal-plots were occupied with foliar spraying treatments i.e. without, foliar spraying with; commercial fertilizer Fert-plus powder, amino acids, yeast extract, and the mixture Fert-plus powder + amino acids + yeast extract. The results showed that genotype 131 surpassed other studied genotype and recorded 100-grain weight, grain yield/ha, and total carbohydrates percentage in grains in both seasons. genotype 128 registered the tallest plants and the highest values of stover yield/ha and crude protein and oil percentages in grains in both seasons. Foliar spraying maize plants three times with the mixture treatment produced the highest values of growth, yields and its attributes and grains quality characters followed by, yeast extract then commercial fertilizer Fert-plus powder as a source of NPK and amino acids in both seasons. It can be concluded that foliar fertilizing maize genotype 131 or 128 with the mixture Fert-plus powder at the rate of 4 g/liter + amino acids at the rate of 2.5 ml/liter + yeast extract at the rate of 100 ml/liter water in each spraying in order to maximize productivity and grains quality under the environmental conditions of the research area.
This study evaluated phytic acid (IP6) effect on the viability, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and calcium release of human periodontal ligament (HPDL) cells in optimal (OGL) and elevated ...glucose level (EGL) in cell culture media.
Cells were seeded in OGL (1000mg/L) or EGL (4500 mg/L) media. IP6 was added at 0.005%, 0.01% or 0.02% concentrations for 24 or 48h, and XTT assay was performed. Cell differentiation and calcium release in presence of 0.02% IP6 in OGL or EGL in non-osteogenic or osteogenic media were analyzed using ALP assay and alizarin red staining, respectively.
In OGL, IP6 enhanced the viability of the cells at both exposure times (P<0.05). However, IP6 lowered the viability of the cells with the presence of EGL compared to the control at both exposure times, except for 0.02% IP6 which showed comparable viability to the control at 48 h. In OGL and EGL, ALP activity of the cells was not affected by the presence of IP6 in non-osteogenic media; however, in osteogenic media IP6 lowered the ALP activity. Meanwhile, calcium release was the highest with IP6 within osteogenic media of EGL.
IP6 effects on the HPDL cells were dependent on IP6 concentration, time of exposure, glucose levels and the osteogenic condition of the media.
This study gives insights on the potential therapeutic effect of IP6 as adjunctive periodontal therapy in patients with diabetes.

Background: A poor physical activity and sedentary behavior is common among individuals which can be detrimental to one's health. Furthermore, sedentary behavior is associated with metabolic ...disorders. Therefore, this study explored factors associated with sedentary behavior and physical activity among individuals in capital region of Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional web-based study was conducted over a period of 3 months in 2023 using prevalidated questionnaires, which address the sedentary behavior and physical activity and its factors. This study included among individuals aged from 19 to 50 years, living in Riyadh. Factors associated with outcome variables were identified using multiple linear regression analysis in SPSS. Results: Of the 833 study participants, 569 (68.3%) and most were males aged between years 31-35 years old. Only 20.6% (n=172) of the activities that induced high levels of breathing or heart rate were vigorous-intensity activities among the respondents. The average number of sitting hours per day was 6.74 (SD=1.577). The regression model's findings showed a significant correlation between mean sitting time and education level (p=0.008), occupation (p=0.001), monthly income (p=0.029), and kind and status of physical activity (p=0.002). Similar to this, there was a significant correlation between age group (p=0.040) and physical activity status (p=0.001) and the amount of time spent engaging in vigorous-intensity activities at work on an average day. Conclusion: The findings of this study confirmed that Saudi adults living in the Riyadh region spent a significant amount of time sedentary, and the most common factors associated with sedentary behavior were education, employment, monthly income, physical activity status, type of physical activity, and reasons for not practicing physical activity. The findings of this study can be used by healthcare providers and those associated with policymaking to improve health outcomes in healthcare settings.
